When the lake was invaded by smelt, alewives, and sea lampreys, the trout were brought to the edge of extinction. In the 1980s, Chinook salmon were imported from the West Coast but now the alewives they eat have dwindled. In an illustration of the cyclical nature of the world, the lake trout population is increasing again.
