Miljan, Pljevlja's first resident to study and earn a degree in America. Since him, others have followed in the pursuit of education in America. He has now earned an MA in development and founded his own NGO based in Kenya. The future for this town and country lies in the hope that these well educated and ambitious young people return home to innovate and define a new Montenegro,  only around since gaining its independence in 2006.

"Eco-tourism is very promising," explains Miljan. "But first something must be done about the mine. Air quality must be improved before Pljevlja will attract ecologically minded tourists." He is hopeful for a future where Pljevlja would be known for its rolling hills and deep forests rather than the mine and illness.
