Syria's historic sites rival those of its Middle Eastern neighbours; it also lays claim to the oldest continuously occupied city (Damascus vies for the title with Aleppo), the spunkiest Crusader castle (Crac des Chevaliers) and the best preserved Roman theatre (in Bosra).
Admittedly, Syria is still on the US State Department's list of countries sponsoring terrorism, but don't let that deter you. The government may not be among the world's most benevolent, but the Syrian people are renowned for their friendliness and hospitality, as anyone who's been there will agree.

After camping a night in a disused rock quarry to evade the Turkish rangers (who aren't very keen on people camping by the roadside in the middle of nowhere), we crossed the border to Syria. Strangely, the soil changes colour from dusty grey to rich ... Read more >
