Syria's historic sites rival those of its Middle Eastern neighbours; it also lays claim to the oldest continuously occupied city (Damascus vies for the title with Aleppo), the spunkiest Crusader castle (Crac des Chevaliers) and the best preserved Roman theatre (in Bosra). Admittedly, Syria is still on the US State Department's list of countries sponsoring terrorism, but don't let that deter you. The government may not be among the world's most benevolent, but the Syrian people are renowned for their friendliness and hospitality, as anyone who's been there will agree.

The Entry into Syria

I entered the border to Syria from Turkey at approximately 8:30 AM, and for the next 8 hours, sat on a bright red, hard-plastic bench, waiting for my visa.  The official policy concerning an American's entry into Syria is that a visa MUST be obtained ... Read more >

Crac des Chevaliers

Crac des Chevaliers is a Crusader castle. And being in Syria it doesn't get overly many tourists. Which is great because you can wander round the place almost by yourself. Until the Scouts show up! I think I remember the Syrian Scouts more than the castle ... Read more >

I started writing about Petra so many times and just found that it was way too hard to explain. It's an amazing site and I think we'll just try and put on some photos to show you what we mean! Same goes for the vast desert landscape at Wadi Rum. It was ... Read more >

Salaam Syria

They reckon that people have been living in Damascus continually for over 8000 years. That's more than eleven times longer than there has been people living in New Zealand! After Jordan, Damascus was a bit chaotic which took us a bit by surprise.... Read more >

No Love Lost in Damascus

Thu, 14 Feb 2008 | By jreuter | Views [291] | Comments [1]

I honestly can not say enough good things about Damascus.  From the very beginning, to the very end, people were helpful, outgoing, and friendly.  Spending the majority of our time in the Old City, we were inevitably lost for what seemed hours in its ... Read more >

The road to Damascus

Wed, 16 Nov 2005 | By stowaway | Views [697] | Comments [1]

After camping a night in a disused rock quarry to evade the Turkish rangers (who aren't very keen on people camping by the roadside in the middle of nowhere), we crossed the border to Syria. Strangely, the soil changes colour from dusty grey to rich ... Read more >
