         		 Loch Ard Gorge was later named after the ship, and was where Tom & Eva, the two kids who survived, washed up on the beach. You can see how narrow the entrance is.: by flyted, Views[612]

         		 Thunder Cave, another gorge where the waves crash into an overhanging of rock and the sound reverberates into the cave. The trail from the parking lot goes right over top of the cave, but you would never know it from above. It will be fun when that collapses.: by flyted, Views[1418]
         		 The Loch Ard crashed into these cliffs on the night of May 31, 1878, with 54 people on board. They had been celebrating the successful end of their three month voyage from England, or so they thought. They were due in Melbourne the next day, but there was thick fog and visibility was likely nil. The captain stayed on deck through the night but at 4am the fog lifted and they were right under the cliffs. The captain tried to turn the ship away and almost succeeded, but she ran aground on a reef and stuck fast. The waves quickly smashed the ship to bits and prevented lifeboats being launched. The ship sank in about 15 minutes, and in the end only two people survived, an 18 year old boy, Tom, and 17 year old girl, Eva, who survived by clinging to wreckage and were rescued 5 hours later.          		 This is what used to be the Island Archway, at the entrance to Loch Ard Gorge on the right. It collapsed recently too, however, in June of 2009. The now two stacks have thus been renamed Tom and Eva, after the two survivors of the Loch Ard (more on that soon).: by flyted, Views[1733]

    And now, the views we all want to see. First off, the trails and cliffs near Loch Ard Gorge, in between the 12 Apostles and the town of Port Campbell. The entire stretch is where the ocean and salt water have eroded the soft limestone cliffs, creating very dramatic formations. The seawater crashing on the big stack at right bears an uncanny resemblance to a sea horse, unexpectedly. That stack, the one on the left and the flat one in between are known as the Three Sisters (unrelated), but the middle sister collapsed less than two years ago, in September of 2009.: by flyted, Views[551]

         		 On the way to the Otway Lighthouse, if you keep your eyes peeled, koalas like to hang out in the trees.          		 Cape Otway Lighthouse, heralded as the

         		 Inside the lighthouse; each stone was hand-carved and interlocked, eliminating the need for mortar. Presumably this makes the lighthouse much stronger, but of course it was incredibly labour intensive. The sign says in 1847-48, it took 70 men 10 months to build the lighthouse - cutting the rock from cliffs several kilometres away, carving the stones to exact sizes and then dragging them here.: by flyted, Views[662]

         		 The famous kangaroos at Anglesea Golf Club. Frequently mentioned as one of the easiest places in Victoria at least to see roos, and it's true. They wander on and off the course as they please.: by flyted, Views[893]
         		 Along the Great Ocean Road; scenic views and pull-offs are every few minutes, as you can imagine. I bet experience has taught the govt. to erect these signs everywhere so daydreaming North Americans remember where they are when they pull back out onto the road.: by flyted, Views[529]
         		 The Great Ocean Road was a make-work project for WW1 veterans and a tribute to their fallen comrades, built between 1919 and 1932. They lived in camps and slowly carved the road out of the cliffs, a distance of 243 km. As a result the Road is considered the world's largest war memorial. This is the memorial arch which explains the story, about 50 km from its start in Torquay. The arch though has been rebuilt twice: in 1974 to widen it, and most recently in 1991 after it was destroyed in the 1983 Ash Wednesday brush fires.: by flyted, Views[567]
     
    Bells Beach near Torquay, the spiritual home of Australian surfing. The curls were just starting to pick up at this time of year; hard to tell but there are some surfers just out past the breakers. The world's oldest surfing competition, the Rip Curl Pro Surf & Music Festival (formerly Bells Beach Surf Classic), has been held here every Easter since 1961.: by flyted, Views[665]
