         		 Queenscliff isn't quite on the open coast, you have to go a bit further around this bay to Point Lonsdale in the distance with the lighthouse. It's about a 45 minute walk along sandy beach to get there.: by flyted, Views[545]

         		 Looking across The Rip to the Portsea cliffs; it was there that the Prime Minister Harold Holt disappeared and was presumed drowned in 1967 while swimming.          		 First view of Queenscliff, in the late afternoon. Queenscliff is an old seaside town and still a favourite day or weekend trip from Melbourne. The pilots who navigate ships through The Rip are based here and go shooting out in their little pilot boats a few times a day to meet up with the ships.: by flyted, Views[495]

    Pt. Lonsdale lighthouse, still very active and crucial for navigation into The Rip. It is staffed 24 hours and sends a light out 12 miles into the Bass Strait. The locals love to come out here in storms and watch the ships try to make their way through.: by flyted, Views[1098]
         		 William Buckley's Cave, in the cliffs under the lighthouse. He was a convict who escaped the prison near Sorrento in 1803, just two months after arriving from England. He made his way around the Bay (Melbourne didn't exist until the 1830's) and evaded capture for the next 30 years, living in this cave and others like it along the coast, and befriending the local Wathaurung people. In 1835 he decided to re-emerge from hiding and walked into Melbourne, told his story, and was soon pardoned by the Governor. Buckley then worked as an Aboriginal interpreter and spent his last 19 years in Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), married, and seemed to live contentedly to the age of 75.: by flyted, Views[12603]

    The massive Captain Cook Memorial Water Jet, turned on each afternoon for a couple hours. Watched over by the massive Canadian Flagpole on the right. The Museum of Canberra with the model of the city inside is to the right of the flagpole, behind the trees.: by flyted, Views[572]
         		 Black swans in the lake, a familiar sight.: by flyted, Views[403]
         		 A bust of Kemal Ataturk, the leader of Turkish independence, who fought in Gallipoli against the Anzacs and later rose to power largely thanks to his reputation gained there. His famous quote here says,
         		 The Australian/Turkish friendship memorial, in the shadow of the War Memorial. Turkey and Australia/New Zealand made an impressive reconciliation not long after Gallipoli, in essence agreeing that the invasion there was a futile idea dreamed up by the British, who pitted two sides against each other who had no real quarrel, and thus had no reason to bear grudge afterwards.          		 Good example of the city maps often seen around town, showing part of the triangle layout on one side of the lake, what they call the Parliamentary Zone. Parliament House is at the top, Old Parliament House in the middle, and then the bottom left are the High Court and National Art Gallery, and bottom right is the National Library.
