         		 Big video screen showing the Mardi Gras parade, aka the Sydney Gay Pride Parade, the largest in the world. The crowd was 15-deep so virtually impossible to get a clear view of the scene.     The statue of Queen Victoria outside the QVB, famous for having stood outside the Irish parliament in Dublin until 1947, when the Irish Republican government gave it to Sydney to avoid it being destroyed by the IRA. It wasn't set up here though until 1987.: by flyted, Views[1198]

         		 There really are very, very few more beautiful cities at night than Sydney. Not many cities can boast two ultra-famous landmarks like this, side by side no less. You can sit for hours and oggle the Bridge and all its lines and angles. It is the most impressive bridge in the world, utterly dominating. Then turn to the other side and spend more hours oggling the Opera House, in all its beauty and ingenuity. Even though it is so famous, it is still hard to grasp that they built it, they actually built it. Of course all of this is framed by the most substantial harbour in the world. The harbour is the heart and soul of the city, and it just keeps going and going. Sydney is a city where even the locals walk around with their cameras out. There were numerous people around me this night with their tripods out, framing their photos. And these were serious tripods and cameras, not something you fit in a suitcase! It is maybe the most photogenic city in the world. You just cannot help taking pictures, every day again and again of the same thing, it is irresistible.: by flyted, Views[994]
         		 Behind the Opera House you can see the Royal Botanic Gardens and The Domain, two more of the large parks in the centre of the city. Kings Cross is in the background, where I was staying.: by flyted, Views[439]

         		 I took the ferry out to the Olympic Park, a 45 minute cruise through the length of the harbour, all included on my transit pass. This view was from the ferry, just passed the bridge.: by flyted, Views[428]

         		 All Sydney ferries have open air sections, most on the roof like this one. Each ferry is a different design, it's like a random collection of boats they have pooled together for the service. It is all operated by the government but likely to be privatized soon, which will eliminate some routes and drive the fares up. A 45 to 60 minute cruise like this would cost $6.60 one way or is unlimited with all transit passes. By far the best value thing you can do in Sydney.: by flyted, Views[593]
         		 A map of the Sydney Olympic Park. It was a little deceptive on paper. The ferry dock is at the top-right edge, next to what is now an industrial zone. It was almost 3 km from the ferry to the stadium near the bottom, where the action is. Most people approach though from the bottom section, either by car, train or bus.     This is a neat fountain near the stadium with water arching over you, you can stand beneath it without getting wet. There are a few steps and at the bottom a reservoir and protected marshland.: by flyted, Views[572]
         		 The fountain is in the middle, and behind on the right is the Acer Arena, used for most of the indoor events during the Olympics. Now it is used for concerts and shows and is apparently the 2nd busiest arena in the world, after Madison Square Garden! There was a Rhianna concert on this night.          		 The Olympic Stadium, now called ANZ Stadium. It has had a few names. It was the largest Olympic Stadium ever built, over 100,000 seats. Now it is a bit more spacious 80,000. The whole Olympic site has a white elephant feel to it when it's quiet, but they do still have a lot of events there and people are gradually moving in as more condos and restaurants etc. are built across the road. The stadium hosts lots of rugby and football games, and held the 2003 Rugby World Cup Final (Australia lost to England, ouch).: by flyted, Views[682]
         		 I didn't watch the Sydney Olympics, I was in res without a TV, and it was at 4 in the morning. But you can watch the opening ceremonies on Youtube I think. This is the flaming disc that lifted dramatically over a waterfall at the pivotal moment; now it sits outside the stadium and I think is still lit from time to time.: by flyted, Views[693]
         		 Luna Park is at the base of the north side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, it is a tiny amusement park with some antique rides and games. The face is famous but really it's just freaky, staring out across the harbour. You walk in under the teeth to enter the park.: by flyted, Views[1204]
     
    When the first convicts arrived in Sydney they lived in tents and houses scattered around the city, and were expected to report for convict duty each day (at that time escape and survival in Australia was pretty much a death sentence anyway). Eventually though the convicts were too hard to control and so in 1819 the Hyde Park Barracks was built, officially as a 'boarding house' but a prison in most respects. The convicts could thus be kept under strict rules in one place and easily roused for their many hours of work each day, About 50,000 men and boys lived here for the next 30 years until 1848 when the convict system ended and the Barracks closed. The clock above was apparently ominous for convicts, who did have an hour or two of free time in the evenings and the odd day off, but had to report home by 9pm or the gates were locked, and they were in BIG trouble. The name under the clock is
         		 The Barracks are now an excellent and vivid museum, restored to its early 1800's appearance and recently named a World Heritage Site. The top floor lists a sample of convicts and their crimes - and punishments. They are listed on a glass panel so a bit hard to read, but a couple samples:
         		 Next we move across the room to a computer terminal with a database of virtually every convict who was sent to Australia. It is a very impressive project which really encourages Aussies to embrace their roots and recognize both their heritage and the fact that most of their ancestors were deported for petty crimes and were essentially just considered
         		 A typical dormitory in the Barracks consisted of parallel rows of 20 to 30 hammocks strung out, with perhaps 6 inches in between when occupied. Men and boys would have slept in a room like this for years. Some convicts were released before their sentence was finished, through good behaviour or currying the favour of the guards or Governor. There were various types of passes that one could gain before absolute freedom. Some men would have been transferred from the Barracks to a boarding house in the city if they were well behaved. But most convicts were housed here and in other Barracks when they first arrived off the ship.: by flyted, Views[1255]
         		 The Sydney ANZAC Memorial is also in Hyde Park, at the south end opposite the fountain. You can enter for free on the right side at ground level and climb up a few steps to the floor of the dome. There is a free small gallery on the ground floor as well with various displays on Australia's war participation.: by flyted, Views[1262]
     
    The highlight of the interior is the dramatic sculpture of a dead youth covering a sword, supported by figures representing his mother, sister and wife. It is a very provocative and striking sight upon entering the memorial.: by flyted, Views[500]

         		 The Pylon lookout at the start of the bridge has some interesting displays on the design and construction. These were the three final designs: The bottom is a cantilever bridge, the middle one is the arch without the pylons, and the top one was the chosen design with pylons. The pylons are purely aesthetic, they are not connected to the arch at all. For decades the Pylon lookout was the highest observation point in Sydney.: by flyted, Views[490]
         		 Sydney CBD from the Pylon, that's Circular Quay in the middle, the main central ferry dock. A small cruise ship is in the middle; there is another larger cruise ship berth over to the right on the far side of The Rocks. The Rocks is the low-rise area straight ahead and below, with the oldest and most historic buildings in the city. It is now meticulously restored and very trendy. The Rocks is where the First Fleet arrived in 1788 and the first structures were built in what became Sydney.: by flyted, Views[733]
