    When the first convicts arrived in Sydney they lived in tents and houses scattered around the city, and were expected to report for convict duty each day (at that time escape and survival in Australia was pretty much a death sentence anyway). Eventually though the convicts were too hard to control and so in 1819 the Hyde Park Barracks was built, officially as a 'boarding house' but a prison in most respects. The convicts could thus be kept under strict rules in one place and easily roused for their many hours of work each day, About 50,000 men and boys lived here for the next 30 years until 1848 when the convict system ended and the Barracks closed. The clock above was apparently ominous for convicts, who did have an hour or two of free time in the evenings and the odd day off, but had to report home by 9pm or the gates were locked, and they were in BIG trouble.          		 The Sydney ANZAC Memorial is also in Hyde Park, at the south end opposite the fountain. You can enter for free on the right side at ground level and climb up a few steps to the floor of the dome.          		 The pedestrian pathway along the Sydney Harbour Bridge offers extremely dramatic views, as one would expect, with a caged-in feel thanks to the fences to stop jumpers. On my bridge climb the most challenging part was the angled beam in the centre of the photo, which has a ladder on the opposite side we had to climb. That beam is one of three sections of the ladder. It was narrow and steep but we were hooked into the safety line the entire time on the bridge.          		 The view from the Pylon onto the bridge. I walked up the right hand side of the arch, up to the flags, and then back down the left side. There are a couple groups of climbers on the right near the top of the arch and the flags, and another group coming down the left. I think on busy days they could take about 200 people an hour out to the bridge on various routes; it could actually get quite crowded.          		 That was me not too long ago, a day just like this. I was in fact there the day before this picture. Walking up the top of the arch is very easy, a nice graceful climb and not nearly as steep as one would imagine. It is more like an easy stroll once you finish climbing the ladders and get up to the top side.: by flyted, Views[369]
     
    Hyde Park is one of the main parks in central Sydney and the closest to the Central Business District (CBD). To the east are museums, government buildings and then the very substantial Botanical Gardens and Domain. To the west the big office towers come right up to the edge of the park. In the middle though there is a beautiful canopy of trees covering a central parade, you can see it is like a tunnel to walk through.          		 A close-up of the Archibald Fountain at the north end of Hyde Park. It was built to commemorate the partnership of France and Australia in World War 1, with money coming from a local newspaper owner after whom the fountain was named. The design is based on Classical Greek and Roman themes and has very fine detail. Apparently it is one of the most impressive public fountains in Australia.: by flyted, Views[556]

         		 The gap between the two big shells. It's really not hard to grasp how it was built, basically fairly straightforward with reinforced concrete, glass and ceramic tiles.
