    The view that was ours alone - the 'rear' of The Twelve Apostles. by: emptynester Views[500] Aboriginal elder Garry Djorlom learnt how to hunt and gather food provided by the land from his father, Dudley Djorlom and his uncles. Walking through the scrub with Garry he would point out and name different trees in his traditional language (Kunwinjku). Occasionally he would stop to pick some fruit “I’m going to take these back to my grand kids” he would say, with an earnest smile. by: arnhemland Views[2353] Once surrounded by ancient seas, the iconic Arnhem Land escarpment or “stone country” is a great example of the relationship between Aboriginal people and the land. During the wet season this sandstone wall is transformed into a plentiful oasis, brimming with fish and birds to hunt. He’s a softly spoken character with a warm, friendly nature. Like many Aboriginal elders, he’s also a storyteller. “If you have a story, don’t put it in your pocket and leave it there, take it out and share it with your family”.     By the pond nearby, soon after yet another ever drenching rain, in Agnes Waters, I bide my time for the few hours of light cloud and sunshine, testing my new camera, by slowly chasing dragonflies. by: tazau Views[976] During yet another heavy downpour, through yet another week of storms, roads cut off to get out of town, a praying mantis comes into the hostel, possibly to escape the flooding rain. It has one leg missing, which was somehow torn right off, a few meters away. by: tazau Views[867] After a long walk out, on the road to 1770, I took a turn and headed towards a quiet beach. I walked back quietly along the ever eroding beach, with trees uprooted all the way along, from the 3 bad storms lasting 4-10 days each, in just 5 - 6 weeks. What a difference a day or 2 makes! It wasn't just here that received 3 long bad batterings, but the majority of the Queensland an NSW east coasts! by: tazau Views[1011] On my first night in Agnes Waters, I took a walk around in pitch black night, on the semi slippery path, in the hostel yard. On the way back to the light, I came across my first, in pitch black night, with my very first very large, ugly, poisonous, pesty Cane Toad. I met lots of along the way, out in every weather. most were small and moving fast, but this was and slow to moving, posing for my camera. by: tazau Views[1121] We subconsciously link terms such as ‘pristine’ to our imaginings of Australia’s world famous coast and deny – or are simply oblivious to – the devastating reality of our own poor waste disposal procedures. What I'd hoped to capture was not the crystal seas and golden sands that we depart to when we daydream, but the actuality of its true, current state.
     
    The Kurnell Oil Refinery provides a backdrop against La Perouse, a popular family beach which also harbours local native bird species such as gulls, herons and pelicans of whose typical diet derives from the sea. Not only does the refinery release a range of pollutants into the air including Sulphur Dioxide, but it also releases waste to ocean drains in the surrounding waters. In heavy rain, oily substances can be seen flowing into Botany Bay, creating a temporary ‘slick’ on the surface. by: zoeaarcher Views[1988] I am often bewildered by the things that can be found having been flushed out of the drains from the gutters of streets surrounding. In a troubling way their assortment can sometimes create a colourful, abstract sight of which is, perhaps, part of the reason we subconsciously turn our heads to the concern at hand. I barely turn an eye towards the fragments of glass that have been weathered by the sea for so long that they, as the waste seen here, eventually become a part of the natural landscape. In the near future will our children be building castles of sand or of our generation’s garbage? by: zoeaarcher Views[976] As I gaze out along the entire surface of the sea where the waves crash in on the shore, countless plastic bottles, cans and other trash create a black sludge-like body of debris that churns and toils in the chaos caused by a large storm. by: zoeaarcher Views[1037] A Silver Gull fruitlessly paces the shoreline in search of something edible, finding nothing but cigarette butts, weathered segments of Styrofoam packaging and whatever other plastic and processed remnants of garbage are flushed out of the storm water drains into the sea. Each piece of which it first tastes before determining, hopefully, that it will not be able to and should not attempt to digest. I fear greatly for those organisms who are unable to differentiate between what should and should not be eaten, or those whose hunger has precedence over their decision making. by: zoeaarcher Views[1019] Tree Climbing for science in the Border Ranges national park of Northern New South Wales.
