    Its a tell of king & kingdom, The greying past's whispers to vibrant present. The Malla kings rules here for 1000 years .Its Mallbhum-the terracotta temples build in 17-18th century. A microcosmic ritual mirroring the Hindu belief in reincarnation, the gods are added to the divine pile of cloth and clay, waiting, as they must, another 51 weeks to be reborn for next year's Durga Puja. by: fahyje Views[1135] Baptism - After the deities have been on display in elaborate and colourful dress around the city for the festival week, they are brought back to the Ganges. For this whole day, there are several popular ghats along the river bank where truckloads of locals arrive amid the throng of bhajans and the ecstasy of celebration. Colourful powder is thrown in the air, as people sing and dance in the street. Once the deities are offloaded, the men bring them down to the water. A microcosm of the Hindu idea of reincarnation, once the festival is over, the deities are unceremoniously and dumped in the Ganges, from whence they came. by: fahyje Views[1323] The Face of God - While most of the artists in the area are working on larger than life sized deities, there are some who work on smaller scales. Again, each piece is treated with the reverence and care that you would expect of a proud parent.     Grapes of Wrath - Kumortuli is an old quarter of Kolkata where families of artists have been working for generations, producing the most beautiful clay deities for the festival of Durga Puja. These deities are born of the Ganges and will be returned to the Ganges. But this was exactly the sense of acceptance that I felt within the Kalimpong community.     This was the first time I had visited a developing country, and in hindsight I'm so glad it was India. Within the first day I'd had a breakdown when the reality of extreme poverty hit me. And yet reaching the more secluded hills of Kalimpong, I witnessed the positive side of poverty. The appreciation that the people had for every little thing was and is something to learn from. One of my biggest learnings was how universal certain traits of humanity were. For instance, the motherly love and pride in this photograph is a familiar subject matter, something we can recognise immediately without needing to know anything more. While India as a 'place' was completely unfamiliar to me, motherly love was as familiar as anything, leaving me questioning the concept of 'place' as location. by: juliezhuphotography Views[897] I can still hear the chuckle of this old woman as we trekked past her home on the side of a hugely steep mountain. Here she is captured pensive, though moments later she would laugh at me trying to take photographs of the dogs lazing at her feet. What I found in the Kalimpong community was a simple contentment with life, free from what we could actually accurately label #firstworldproblems, minor problems of the developed world which we blow far out of proportion. I think it's also very important to emphasise the agency of these people, recognising that they have hopes, fears, and lives as vivid as anyone else. by: juliezhuphotography Views[933] In the backdrop of Ratnagiri Hill is the smoke coming out from 'Choolah'. Traders come prepared for 2 weeks to live in this open field till their business transcation is done of buying or selling livestock. The role of nature and people’s responsibility towards it is still unclear it seems in many parts of southern India. This river runs along the edge of Saraguru and while it is revered (a temple can be seen in the middle of the river) and valued for its role in agricultural irrigation and domestic uses, certain practices such as washing clothes along the bank introduces soaps and toxins into the water. This is affecting some of the fish populations and degrading the health of the ecosystem.     “Fresh meat”. Another shop keeper was weighing and sorting fish when we passed by. Like the other shop keepers we met, he was eager to share his work with us. When we stopped to see what he was doing, he told us to wait and he would show us how he cleans and prepares the fish. His skilled hands didn’t hesitate as he peeled back the scales, pulled the head off and cut the meat into pieces to be sold. by: jbatryn Views[1848] “Eager to share”. While wandering through the shop-lined streets in Saraguru, we stopped to ask some of the shopkeepers if we could take pictures of their colorful shops. The language barrier was overcome with gestures and smiles, and when they saw that we were interested in their shops and their work, they were more than happy to open up to us and share about their livelihoods. They proudly showed their large piles of cotton outside and then motioned for us to follow them to another building where they had a large pile of lentil-like grain, which they again proudly showcased. Cotton is grown near Saraguru and it is fairly common to see trucks overloaded with large bags of cotton passing through the narrow streets. Cotton is a very labor intensive crop and one of the local men said that many parents do not want their children to continue in farming. Instead, the children are encouraged to become doctors or engineers, where they can enjoy an easier life. Partly due to this, more and more people are moving away from the rural areas to find work in those fields and farm owners are finding it increasingly harder to find labor to help run the farms. by: jbatryn Views[1320] “Main Street”. The village of Saraguru is located in southern India and is a mix of old and new. Many people have cell phones but lack reliable electricity or plumbing and the road is shared between overloaded trucks, bicycles, and people and livestock walking.
