The streets are often bustling with foreign tourists since it forms the center of Kathmandu’s tourist industry. Life of a shepherd attracts her less and less.     At the Pashupati Hindu Temple in Kathmandu, this young street boy, armed with a rope and magnet, fishes for coins (used as funeral offerings) in the holy waters of the Baghmati River, amongst the cremated remains of corpses. by: captivate Views[1390] At over 4000 m and suffering from the throes of altitude sickness, I awoke on the third day of my Everest trek to this beautiful sight: crystallised ice laced onto the glass of the window next to my bed in sprawling, intricate patterns. She attended the same private school in Kathmandu that the orphans I worked with went to, many of them on generous scholarships.     The black & white photo at the top was taken by me. The man smiling is Meme Sherpa, and he is the man I lived with for a couple of weeks in the Himalayas. The color photo below is a photo he took of me moments after I captured the above photo. This is what travel photography should be like, and I curse at the countless photographers out there intruding on people with their big lenses and their fame-hungry photographic style. This brother and sister came running from their house to greet me as soon as they saw me walk by. The young girl is greeting me with a generous This beautiful little girl, who appeared to be no older than three, looked at us with curious eyes. The people who live in the mountain town of Dhading rarely see foreigners, with the exception of the occasional volunteer teaching English. She was all alone and must have climbed up the side of the mountain from her house. This may seem odd to Americans and Europeans that children at such a young age are given the freedom to roam with no adult supervision, but in Nepal it is fairly common. by: ordinarytraveler Views[1095]
     
    This ceremony is called Lakh Batti, also known as one hundred thousand lights. The photo was taken at Soyambhu Temple in Kathmandu, Nepal. This ceremony is performed for many different reasons in the Hindu religion including; remembering the dead, to change the course of one’s life, to give good fortune, to heal health problems and many other situations. The woman in this photo is taking great care to stoke the fire and in my mind, the fire symbolizes a loved one who has passed. by: ordinarytraveler Views[1809] As we enter the courtyard of a temple in Pashupatinath in Kathmandu, my attention is drawn to an old man who is sitting in the sun, in the middle of the courtyard. He is sitting indian style and smoking a cigarette. In front of him lies a pack of smokes and a box of matches. He looks to be sitting on a mat made of straw, which protects his bare feet and legs from the blistering cement. I’m captured by his fluid and tranquil movements. He gives off a sense of calmness. I’m not sure who he is, but to me he embodies the spirit of a holy man.
