    A couple enjoy the day at the Plaza de Armas with their daughter during Cusco Carnival or Cusco Week, when there are daily processions in the Plaza de Armas, the central plaza in historic Cusco. by: shirak Views[552]
     
    A group of men struggle under the weight of a saints' effigy as they carry it through the streets of Cusco and around the Plaza de Armas, during the festival of Corpus Christi. They will do this all day and into the night when they will store the effegies until morning in La Catedral, a Spanish colonial cathedral, which you can see behind them. Celebrated exactly nine weeks after Easter, it is a ritual co-opted by the Spanish in the 16th Century to Catholicize the Incan people. The effigies are treated as living beings in a similar way as the Inca paraded their ancestors' mummies around that same plaza centuries before. by: shirak Views[816] This young girl paused to glare at me during a morning procession of her kindergarten class (one amongst many) that paraded around the Plaza de Armas preceding the grander processions during the festival of Corpus Christi. by: shirak Views[680] Early one morning at the crack of dawn, after attempting to photograph a Cusco sunrise, I spotted this man walking up the Calle Triunfo, a famous Incan stone-walled alley. It was in this moment that I began to see how the Andean people navigate (literally and figuratively) the ancient and modern aspects of their city. by: shirak Views[535] Karma is reading a book she brought from Kathmandu about interesting facts from around the world. The only way to stay connected with the other side in a way. Spring in the Himalayas is beautiful but among the striking landscapes lays harsh reality. The only person who Karma can open up about her aspirations is her little brother and random strangers. Father has left yaks high up in the mountains for a day. He spends time with Karma’s younger brother who is spinning his prayer drum in the puja corner.     Mother is preparing traditional Tibetan tea. What seems like a perfect household is actually on the brink of collapse as there’s no one to continue the tradition. Karma wants to study psychology in Kathmandu but can’t explain this to her mother and feels sore about that. by: palnitro Views[988] 16 years old daughter of the yak shepherds Karma is enjoying her morning wash. It will be her first summer with the family after a few years of high school in busy and “civilized” Kathmandu. Life of a shepherd attracts her less and less. She has a Facebook account now too. by: palnitro Views[1473] Early morning in the high valley (4300m) at the edge of Upper Mustang (Nepal) where mother of a small family is milking one of the 70 yaks that belong to them. Behind that mountain is Tibet. Yaks are very valuable and provide food, fur/wool and fuel for many remote villages in the desert area. While one may be considered rich having so many yaks it is a non-stop hard work that only leaves room for a prayer. by: palnitro Views[1579] In the morning, we all piled in the truck with dogs and fishing gear and drove down to the river. Brad and Jess taught us the basics of casting, as the dogs ran along the banks sniffing for wildlife. By mid-afternoon, Rex and I each caught our first fish. Here, Brad holds Rex’s trout. It is these spontaneous invitations that make some of the most memorable travel experiences and the best ‘short rides up the road.’ by: martystano Views[1110] After we pitched our tent outside, Jess invited us in for dinner. She poured Chilean wine while the dogs stretched out across the floor. Brad played his banjo until the sun went down. We told travel stories and laughed while waiting for the chicken to cook on the wood stove. They shared advice for hikes we would encounter on our journey further south.     15 years ago, Brad came to Patagonia for his first season as a fly fishing guide and has been back ever since. He invited Rex and I to stay the night on their farm where he and Jess live in a simple home, one of several structures built hastily along the grid of the Rio Simpson Valley when the pioneering electrical company first arrived for construction. There is no running water inside, but it is of no importance. The running of trout in the clear crisp rivers of the Patagonia outside is what matters. The farm is quiet, except for the occasional roar of the Patagonian wind that rips across the tin roof. Luckily for us, and our tent, there was no wind that night. by: martystano Views[866] We accepted what was supposed to be a ‘short ride up the road.’ Rex jumped in back with a woman and two dogs reluctant to move over. The driver mistook us for Argentines as I started the small talk in Spanish. Eventually, he asked where we were from. “Estados Unidos,” I replied as his jaw dropped, along with the veil of confusion and polite attempts to speak a foreign language. We laughed with our new friends Brad and Jessica as we realized we found fellow gringos so far from home. by: martystano Views[713] I’ve learned patience in many forms while pursuing my dream to travel through Patagonia. Research, work, save money, buy plane ticket. Teach English in Chile for 6 months, live with host family, learn Spanish. Wait for best friend to accept invitation to quit everything within a month to backpack with you for the next three. And here: Hitchhike Chile’s adventurous Carretera Austral road, sometimes waiting up to 12 hours a day, in hope for a ride to the next adventure. There is something majestic about standing in one country and seeing the cusp of another. When looking deeper, you can see the bridge that leads the way and the clouds seemed to be pulling you further, to adventure into the unknown beyond. by: katielongleyphotography Views[348] When travelling to Val D'isere in France, I wanted to document the mountains beyond the ski resort. I think this picture represents my lasting impression on the place. When I was atop the mountain with nothing but my camera, I felt a sense of deep peace that can only be accomplished by immersing yourself in complete nature.     This damn has been built in between Val D'isere and Tignes in France. On passing it between the resorts I felt that I had to visit this place where man had intervened in nature. There were no bus routes so I hiked for nearly 3 hours to reach this spot. I was intrigued by the lake in the mountainous path and the obvious human evidence but the lack of active human activity. by: katielongleyphotography Views[430] I was attempting to discover the mountains beyond the ski resort in Val D'isere, France. I had taken the ski lift up Le Fornet and had taken the hikers path over the mountain. As I passed a man, I turned around to watch his ascent up the path. There were no skis here. I don't know where he came from or where he was going but I was compelled to take his photograph as he continued his journey round the mountain. by: katielongleyphotography Views[395] The old lady who smelled of alcohol - Bhutan was the happiest country I've ever seen. A country without red lights (though Thimpu, the capital, tried to introduce them once, they were soon dropped after protests from people), without arguments and without an overly exaggerated sense of ambition. The people were happy, genuinely, no matter whatever little or big they did, they went on about their lives calmly, without being particularly bothered about the world outside, and were very religious. I found this old woman, or rather she found me, outside a temple in Thimpu. As she came near me, my nostrils were filled with the alcohol on her breath, and yet, she smiled unabashedly, pointing to the camera suggestively. I took a few shots of her and when I showed them to her, she instantly burst into a laughter which resembled a 20-year old young girl, obviously flattered and turning crimson. It took her sometime to stop laughing and get ready for the next shot. After that, she tried explaining me something that I failed to understand, so she walked away smiling. I am yet to meet a more friendly stranger who left me feeling like I had met my favourite model. by: kavyanjali Views[803] Head monk entering Kyichu Lhakhang - I happened to be inside Kyichu Lhakhang during one of the prayer times and suddenly all around me, from every mouth I could see or not see, from every room of the temple, began a chanting of seven words. The head monk had entered the sanctum sanctorum, and that must have been the cue for everyone to begin their afternoon prayers. Technically without a tune, the chanting, sung loudest by the head monk, turned into something exceptionally powerful and within minutes produced wonderful vibrations, with everyone, including the outsiders who did not know the words at first, singing along, rocking together. by: kavyanjali Views[715] The old lady at Kyichu Lhakhang: Bhutan offers shelters inside temples, chortens, stupas and monasteries for its older citizens to rest or sleep during the day. At Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the countries oldest temples, I found her whispering something funny about me to her fellow shelter seekers. Maybe because I had the camera pointed straight at her. Her instant reaction of making fun of me taught me one of the most important things I learnt about portrait or travel photography - engaging with the moment. I sat with her then, unable to understand her language, and she talking continuously to me as if it didn't matter I couldn't understand her. Bhutan's Gross National Happiness formula fully executed, I had thought in my mind then. I took this shot of her after taking her permission as I left the temple. by: kavyanjali Views[857]
     
    Young monks at Paro Monastery - Two young monks, selling religious amulets and lucky charms, laugh at something my mother asked them. Usually very shy, especially when surrounded by women who point cameras at them, these two couldn't resist after a few minutes of us imploring them to answer a few questions that they thought were absolutely unnecessary or were not difficult enough to be questions. Monk training is very gruelling and requires a great amount of strength. Even the Dalai Lama once admitted he wanted to run away during the course of his monk education. So it is very rare to see them laugh like this, especially the younger ones. by: kavyanjali Views[1498] Tiger's Nest Monastery (Taktsang) - The crowning jewel of Bhutan. Tiger's Nest monastery, 1.5 hours drive away from Paro Valley, is perched at a cliff precariously, and by what legends suggest, strands of the hair of the angels. Guru Padmasambhava - the second Buddha - flew to the spot on the back of a Tigress - hence the more common name of Tiger's Nest. The monastery is built around the cave where Padmasambhava meditated and the head monk, if available, does not hesitate to take travellers to the very stairs that lead down to the sacred site. Owing to its strange and rather lonely location, every step in the monastery can be heard perfectly clear and one can almost imagine, if they closed their eyes, how Padmasambhava's chantings must have echoed in the mountain. by: kavyanjali Views[1155]
     
    A bunch of kids along with an elder guy is all smiles, as they pose with their photographs. I had done a small Help-Portrait session with these kids on my visit to Huchukpara, whereby I gave them a print of their portraits. None of them ever had a printed photograph of themselves before and this simple gesture lit up their priceless smiles!     Sujoy and his gang are having a ball (literally!) at the local ground. An intense game of football is underway on the swampy fields of the village under the blazing sun. It rained heavily just a few hours back and now the sun is shining in its full glory. This fickle weather is ironically very symbolic of the winds of change that Huchukpara is witnessing of late. by: sudhyasheel Views[992] In the quaint hamlet of Huchukpara in Suri (Birbhum,West Bengal), Sujoy (the boy with the unbuttoned shirt) and his friends proudly pose in front of his Solar powered house. The Solar Panel can be seen at the background on top of an improvised bamboo pole. In this remote village with no electricity, Solar energy is literally lighting up a lot of lives and smiles. by: sudhyasheel Views[1416] With the closest town 110km's away, peace and the natural world are at their best. by: sophiesiegelphotography Views[249] This lower jaw of what appears to be from a mega fauna animal. It started to uncover only a few days earlier, and depending on the wind, could be covered up again within a few more days. Perfect vantage point for prey. by: sophiesiegelphotography Views[307] Home of the famous 'Mungo Man', Lake Mungo is an amazing place for so many more reasons; Namely, it's a wildlife wonderland. After a big rain, these guys scatter themselves over the lakes roads, fearful of eagles above, but not of cars... by: sophiesiegelphotography Views[1104] Again, working with the number three and the form of a triangulation, this picture was taken on the South Downs, in Sussex, during that same weekend of snow. I was drawn to the balance of colour between that of the sledge and the colour of the dog, of the direction of which each three is looking on the incline of the slope. by: matthewcoleman Views[334] This picture describes the relationship of a father and his daughter, of the strength of the father (my dear friend Ben) carrying his younger daughter on top of his shoulders. The composition of which is set against a triangulation of people, placed in twos, with the tip of a windmill barely creeping out of the top of the hill. The windmill creates its own triangle that subtly mirrors that of the human forms around it. by: matthewcoleman Views[489] A piece of public art, cutting out of the blanket of snow like a whale fin, made me drawn to this piece as an object of intrigue within a landscape.
