    Gnocchi with a simple tomato, garlic, and basil sauce. Perfect for a hearty lunch! by: pmok Views[307] My first attempt at gnocchi, came out quite nice!     At the last Ecoclub, we had kids made wallet out of empty milk and juice boxes. It's amazing how creative we can be when resources are limited. by: pmok Views[279] Saw fishermen cleaning these at the market so I asked what they were. Ta-da!     Baked squid with potatoes and onions, with lentils on the side and fresh passion fruit juice.     The busiest street in Puerto Lopez on a rare sunny day (in the winter months it's usually cloudy), this is like a metropolis compared to Tofo! by: pmok Views[501] Rare appearance by the sun in the afternoon today, so kids came out to play. Has been gray and cloudy daily, it's winter here. by: pmok Views[449] Funny store in the main tourist strip that named itself There are views of the beach here without dead sharks.     Another batch of hammerhead, that's a larger male not fitting into the crate (can tell the sex by the two claspers). by: pmok Views[2398] A good catch of squids, plus a huge marlin cut into pieces, both actually look tasty.     When the boats come in, a herd of buyers and carriers swarm the boats to make deals. by: pmok Views[400] Where the rays should not be: the back of a truck. by: pmok Views[404] These rays were so large, they needed three people to lift into the truck. by: pmok Views[424] Fish market is a flurry of activities in the morning: fishermen, the butcher, the vendors, the trucks, the curious tourists, and then there's us! by: pmok Views[437] The type of catch I like to see more of at the fish market, the sustainable (and delicious) ones! by: pmok Views[473]
     
    Sometimes the fishermen hide the sharks and rays so we cannot count them. I found these two sharks hidden behind a crate, think they are Pacific Angelhead. by: pmok Views[403] Sharks aren't the only victims, here are two tubs of rays, the head already cut and body hacked up. Notice the beautiful spotted one in the left tub. by: pmok Views[447] Indicative of which part of a shark is worth money or not. The bodies, though not wasted but sold as meat, are often left on the sand while the fins are cleaned and safe in a tub. by: pmok Views[496] On a few occasions the fishermen let us measure the sharks. Buyers may be from a restaurant, a seafood purveyor, or just people looking for something to cook and eat. by: pmok Views[491] There are all kinds of fish caught (mostly sustainable ones), not just sharks.     Here is the prize of the catch: its fin. by: pmok Views[502] A brutal day at the fish market, counted over 100 sharks caught, here was just a few of them, five alopias pelagicus and a carcharhinus limbatus (black tip), the latter one is the kind I swam with in Tofo. by: pmok Views[687] Poor thing had shells stuck on its carapace and even its head! by: pmok Views[657] We captured this little guy in the harbor and tagged it. by: pmok Views[1453] Baking has resumed!
