The uneasy journey creates even a bigger respect for the impressive volcano, which is considered a living god and climbing it is a little pilgrimage. by: adelice Views[301] The Bromo volcano is not easily accessible, you must travel through large areas of sand. The local tribe members, the Tenggerese are not Muslims but kept their ancient that are based on Hinduism. by: adelice Views[217] Gypsy girl crossing the creek in Negreni at the annual flea-market in October. Many gypsy families come to the market from afar, some of them still come by horses and carts. They sleep in tents in the nearby forests and wash in the creek by Negreni. This young girl looked like a wonder, so beautiful so I couldn't keep my eyes off her and when she crossed the creek, and most likely the cold water tickled her feet, I managed to captured her smile, which was shy and playful in the same time. by: zsrepasy Views[641] Relaxing moments on the top the hill after a long hike, overlooking the village. Uncle Istvan, man of agriculture and man of nature, knowing every single bits and pieces of the hills, forests and valleys that surround his village, Chiocis-Strugoni, led us to the top of one of the highest hills surrounding the village.     The oldest resident of Strugeni village, a story of smile and tears at the same time. She is over 90, and told me that her sons are dead, and her grand-children are living abroad making her feel very lonely in this village that once has been flourished. People used to live well on agriculture, nowadays the youth tries to leave the village as soon as possible to find jobs in larger cities. This inevitably leads to the village growing older and older, one day maybe it will be empty. Her face and her story still haunts me a bit as the smile is mixed with the tears in her eyes. by: zsrepasy Views[406] Slippery road tricked one of the bulls on the way home, late afternoon. In most villages in Transylvania, the cows and bulls are returning home alone, knowing their way. As I was standing in front of the local pub with some local men, talking, I heard the sound of the cowbell from the distance. When I saw them approaching, one of the men from the pub started frantically running towards the animals, so I grabbed my camera, expecting something to happen. One of the bulls got frightened and slipped on the wet road, creating this funny scene, naming the guy as the Elder secler (szekely) man in traditional clothes making business using his wits and charming personality.To give an example for his sharp sense of humour. The Museum of Contemporary Art is featuring some of his works for the first time in the gallery. This photograph looks not only at Kapoor’s reflective work ‘The Sydney Eye’, it also looks at what an object is, in relation to other things. In this case, Kapoor’s circular work reflecting the sky around Sydney, is juxtaposed against the solid square matt mass of the museum itself. It is fitting because Kapoor’s work looks at ideas of form, voids and content, and how an object can be and not be. I was particularly pleased to catch this moment of two workers shining the great reflective surface, preparing the work for the public gaze, themselves becoming a piece of art in my photograph.     (3) This image of a young girl running past the work “Stasis’ by Claire Healy and Sean Cordeiro outside the front of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, looks at the idea of active participation in public art. We can without knowing, be creating art, while observing it. With the plane heading off to the left and the girl running off to the viewers right, I was lucky that her bright pink dress helped to tie the two elements together. (This photo was taken with an iPhone) by: clarebardsleysmith Views[355] (2) In the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, a nearby glass exhibition case creates a horizontal distortion of Nick Savvas’ vertical artwork “Showtime 1999”, when a MCA guest walks by. In a gentle wink to the viewer, I was playing with the idea of making art with art. There is Savvas’ work and then there is my addition to it, which can add to or alter the original meaning. A very contemporary idea. Ideas about how we make and record art, who is the author of the works we create and how globalisation and technology change the way we communicate with each other, are all playing out in everyday life. It houses some of the best collection of contemporary artists in the world today. I wanted to photograph how people interact with public art in a post modern world. There is now an almost expected interactive experience at every corner, due to how we now use technology to document our lives. With the advent of social media and the almost shameless self promotion of the individual, new ideas about the role of the artist as the sole contributor to work are being left behind. It is in this vain and in keeping with the idea of interactivity, I chose to use mobile photography as the photographic medium to document this ‘place I have visited’ In this example a young woman with appropriately colour co-ordinated earphones, takes a profile shot of herself in front of Robert Owen’s ‘Sunrise’ exhibit. This exhibit concentrates on light and colour and it’s structure allows for the re-organisation of the pieces for different spaces. The girl looks like she was created especially to be part of this exhibition. An accidental collaboration. She takes a picture of herself to preserve the moment, while I observe her, observing herself. The Verandah: once people had time to sit down and enjoy life, time to spend with family and friends, and most importantly, time for themselves. But all that is gone now. Nobody has time for anything; all that remains are spaces that were once places! Sihastria Monastery in Neamt County is located in a natural beautiful landscape surrounded by forests. The monastery administrates several hermitages that are more and more visited by pilgrims and some tourists. It was a rainy day when I visited it and the wet tiles, the sound of the rain and the religious chants coming from the cemetery introduced me into a soft atmosphere. However, the sight of clothes hanging out to dry in front of monks' houses reminded me of everyday life's necessities. by: melekbayoudh Views[486] The curiosity of discovering how much importance is given to soccer in Moldavia, led me to the stadium in Iaşi to see the match of Iaşi vs Bacau. I sincerely didn't pay much attention to the game but focused on the expression of disappointment or joy of the audience. A singular tradition is to eat sunflower seeds and to throw their shells on the floor while watching the game. This scene was taken during the definitive goal by the Iaşi team. by: melekbayoudh Views[204] During the travel from Durău to Iaşi, the driver needed a break and so he stopped at Bicaz lake for half an hour. I decided to have a walk and see if I could meet someone in this place surrounded by high pines. I saw a carpenter and talked to him using the very few Romanian words that I learnt during my travel. It was a surprise when that middle-aged man replied to me in Italian. After a nice conversation I accepted to pay for a trip on the lake. However before going on board he explained me that, unfortunately, a big factory discharges the industrial waste into the lake. He called his friend who works as a taxi-boat driver for the local and there I met the young man that you see in the photo. After having faced the disappointing big amount of garbage, the young man invited me inside the cabin since I was freezing. Despite the difficult communication since he spoke only Romanian, he explained me that the boat is his only house. He opened the door behind him and showed me his tiny room with a little bed and few objects. He then told me that he doesn't want to leave the lake of Bicaz and that he is happy with his life. by: melekbayoudh Views[213]
     
    A special encounter near the monastery in Voroneṭ, the most interesting and touching of all my travel. A 90-year-old man who still works as a farmer. He admitted that it has been a miracle for him to come back home alive after taking part in the Second World War. All wrinkles emphasizing his hard life disappeared in the vivid light of his eyes. He kept smoking and smiling willing to speak about his family and to ask information about where I come from. At the end of our conversation he wisely expressed his gratitude to life and confessed that he is a happy man. by: melekbayoudh Views[172] I took this photo in Durău, a town located at 780-800 m altitude in Neamţ County at the proximity of Ceahlău Massif. The location is disadvantaged because of the lack of accessibility since 2006 because the main route was closed due to landslides. Durău counts few inhabitants that are mainly devoted to agriculture and sheep-farming. There is also a beautiful orthodox monastery founded in the XVII century, where people from all the county go to celebrate the Easter mass. This old woman is 88 years old and still works at the farm taking care of animals. She was very kind and happy to receive some visitors. Although she didn't speak much, her eyes were very soulful. She lives with her son, a 70-year-old sheep-keeper, and his wife. Thanks to this and other encounters during the journey in Durău, I could experience the humility of a simple life lived in harmony with nature. by: melekbayoudh Views[248] Dinner on Jamaa-El-Fna, Marrakech, Morocco, December 2012 - Jamaa-el-Fna is a square and market in Marrakech´s medina quarter (old city), where you can satiate all your senses, especially when you are hungry, this place is perfect for you. In weekend or when schools off, kids usually help their parents who work in the market. This handsome boy sells big sized plastic bag. Many sellers don’t provide that, instead they use small sized plastic bags, in which will make buyer hold many small sized plastic bags. The big sized plastic bag will help buyers to easily hold all their stuffs. Sometimes, this boy also hired by buyer to bring buyer’s stuff to buyer’s vehicle. by: jesicaindah Views[661] Petai (stink bean) seller,busy arranging his vendible, and serving his buyers. In high demand, the price of petai can increase to 7 times normal price, and people will still buy it because it’s one of local favorite commodity. by: jesicaindah Views[717] I must admit seeing bones used in such a fashion did feel a little eery. These are the remains of real people. I found myself thinking, who were they, what did they do, what would they have thought about having their skulls and bones used to decorate the inside of a chapel. Is this beautiful or horrible is not for me to say, but each of the I was amazed that a building that was built over 1800 years ago could literally take my breath away. As I walked around inside the Pantheon, I noticed many others with the same enthusiasm as me - mouths open, approving gasps of amazement and spinning their bodies in circles whilst looking up in an attempt to take it all in. by: griff Views[418]
     
    Although unable to fully comprehend what occurred in the Colosseum all those years ago, my youngest daughter was wide-eyed and amazed with this site. To me, this photo shows a contrast between youth and history. by: griff Views[441] The spiral staircases in the Vatican Museum truly are a marvel to the eye. Although the intricacy and beauty of this design is often captured from above, I had no idea how amazing these stairs looked from below. My experiencing while interning at UMS mimics this photo, seeing an opportunity, something beautiful, but only being able to capture parts of it. Being a women photographer who is American in an office of Indians and Omanis posed many barriers I had to overcome thus depressing my confidence and creativity with taking photos.     As I was walking down the streets of Muttrah, a port city in Oman, I spotted far in the distance a old man experiencing homelessness. He seems to have three possessions, his cane, hat, and prayer beads. My father then pulled a few Rials from his pocket and handed it to my little sisters to put in his hat when we passed by. by: rayasultan Views[901] This photo is of my father and his younger brother, Salam walking back to the village compound after picking dates, as my father and his brothers did as young boys for their livelihood. They now only pick dates as a pass time when visiting the village. My father is carrying a plastic red bucket as my uncle has collected his dates in a traditional woven bag. by: rayasultan Views[713] This is of my father, Sultan, climbing a mountain in the village of Tawiyah. He didn't grow up here, but in a village near by, Al Kamil. My father has family in Tawiyah so we spend time there when I visit Oman. My father grew up selling, harvesting, picking, and selling dates to pay his way to attend school in Saudi Arabia. Like this photo, my father literally climbed his way up from the village ruins to achieve where he is now; a husband, father of six, professor, and the strongest man I know. by: rayasultan Views[1055] This moment was captured at Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat, Oman. I commonly would walk on the elevated paths to get from place to place, which is expected as a women, while the men walked on the ground. I stopped for a moment and looked over the edge to see these university students mingling while two others passed by. They are dressed in traditional Omani garb known as a 'dishdasha'. I presume these men come from a moderate/high socioeconomic class due to there head scarfs, material of their dress, and phones. To attend this institution you have to be in the top percent of your class, so these men I presume went to a good private school in Oman. As you can tell all of my assumptions of these men are just that, assumptions, as a women and being half Omani in my traditional abaya, I may never known the answers to those questions or hear the stories of their lives. by: rayasultan Views[1227] A rooster thrown by the Hindunese to the crater of Bromo Mt as an offering is being caught by people.
