    An old man begins the kora at Drepung Monastary ~ I was gasping for breath on some of the steep cliffs (blaming it on the altitude, ahah) but he was doing just fine. by: lolo Views[641] This young monk led us around the kora at Drepung Monastary, taking the time to show us where we were meant to pray (touching our foreheads to holy rocks, and the like....) as well as posing for pictures for us. by: lolo Views[595] A young monk posing for photos at an altar along the Drepung kora circuit.     Spinning a prayer wheel, shielded from germs by the mask ~ a man makes his way around the Potala kora. by: lolo Views[450] This woman and her baby were lying by the side of the path leading up to the Potala Palace ~just begging for cash and food. by: lolo Views[560] Walking the kora surrounding the Potala, I was struck by how SHORT some of the women were, as compared to Mats, Carl, and even Chontelle and myself. by: lolo Views[467] A monk sitting beneath a tree as we exited the Potala was kind enough to grant us permission to take pix. by: lolo Views[463] The Potala Palace ~ and Mats.... by: lolo Views[470]
     
    Some monks along the pathway to the Potala Palace...i really love that they are beside the speed sign, and though you maybe can't tell ~ a couple of them are on their cell phones, too....!! by: lolo Views[580] Chontelle and I, our second morning in Lhasa. We are sitting at our regular breakfast spot ~ a cafe overlooking Barkhor Square. by: lolo Views[559] Walking back to the Yak Hotel, I noticed this young boy crying as his mother tried to comfort him. She saw me watching, and pointed me out to him ~ he stopped wailing immediately and just STARED, tears frozen on his cheeks.     The woman who sold me my little prayer wheel ~ the stall is one of the zillions lining the barkhor kora around the jokhang. by: lolo Views[475] Leaving Nechung Monastary, the woman on the left was giggling madly ~ definately something wrong with her ~ and the one on the right was begging for money. We ended up giving her 1 mao, which she seemed happy with. (10 mao = 1 yuan, 6.7 yuan = 1 dollar) by: lolo Views[532] At Nechung Monastary, once the seat of the Oracle of Tibet. The Dalai Lama would consult the oracle on all important issues of state. He would go into a trance in order to give his advice...really spooky, according to eyewitnesses. The Oracle fled to Dharamsala with the Dalai Lama ~ leaving behind such strange things as this door painted up with flayed human skins. by: lolo Views[570] Just checking to see how hot the solar heater really gets ~ this is how they boil water up at the monastaries, and in the homes throughout the Tibetan quarter of Lhasa. by: lolo Views[691] Spinning the prayer wheels at Drepung Monastary, about 7km out of Lhasa. This was literally one of the best days I had in Tibet ~ beautiful sunny weather, a great hike, and friendly people. by: lolo Views[510]
     
    In the debating courtyard at Drepung Monastary ~ the monks gather at 3pm almost every day for very noisy debates. You can hear the voices echoing through the buildings, and they punctuate their points with 2 loud, sharp claps. by: lolo Views[605] Detail inside one of the chapels wihthin Drepung Monastary ~ I had to pay Y10 in order to take photos. by: lolo Views[588] Yup, definately hot. by: lolo Views[516] At Drepung Monastary ~ an old man beginning his kora. by: lolo Views[533] The scene out front of the Jokhang ~ one of the prayer poles can be seen in this shot, as well as monks and pilgrims (and tourists?) wandering around. by: lolo Views[1664]
     
    Just out front of the Jokhang ~ women praying and chatting and enjoying the sunshine. by: lolo Views[570] Two old men lift a vat of ~ well, either beer or yak butter ~ up onto their bicycle out front of the Jokhang. by: lolo Views[559] Out front of the Jokhang, there are two massive prayer poles, covered with flags. As the pilgrims make their way around the Barkhor Kora, they stop to touch foreheads to the poles ~ this woman made sure her infant was participating, too. by: lolo Views[574] Walking the Barkhor Kora is like stepping back in time ~ pilgrims from all over Tibet are bundled up, grimy, with babies strapped to their backs ~ all spinning prayer wheels and murmuring mantras. by: lolo Views[610] Ah, my favourite shop ~ The Ancient Things Store! by: lolo Views[685]
     
    Devout pilgrims out front of the Jokhang, polishing the paving stones with their prostrations. by: lolo Views[573] Walking the Barkhor kora ~ a place full of interesting faces and characters. by: lolo Views[556] The Chinese memorial to the 'liberation' of Tibet, more than 50 years ago. Conveniently located directly opposite the Potala ~ I suppose we can be grateful theres no statue of Mao ~ yet. by: lolo Views[580] ME out front of the Potala. by: lolo Views[562] Looking down on the street, as we left the restaurant, we saw all these amazing people hanging out, playing music ~ just enjoying the day.     In one of the alleyways behind the Jokhang. I'm not really sure what was going on here ~ some sort of game, where you have to shoot out the balloon to win a prize, I think. I just thought that the little guy with the gun was interesting. by: lolo Views[531] Out front of the Potala Palace.     Looking out over Sera Monastary....all whitewashed walls and red trim. by: lolo Views[601] This huge skinny building is used at festival times to hang giant 'thankas' ~ tapestries illustrated with a buddhist theme. by: lolo Views[688] At Sera Monastary ~ it was a gorgeous day, and I fell far behind everyone else as I stopped to take pictures of everything. by: lolo Views[1838] Prayer flags EVERYWHERE at the Drepung Monastary outside of Lhasa. by: lolo Views[617] Carl shows some tibetan people his guidebook ~ maybe the most they will see of tibet, outside of lhasa. by: lolo Views[640]
     
    Sitting with a tibetan girl ~ I had sat down to have my photo taken with the red door, and she ran over to join me.
