This is a picture of a young boy who lives in the slum near the rubbish dump. Cambodia has a lot of help and aid from both inside the country and outside, and it all makes a difference, but stories like this boy’s are still all too common.     -Master of All I Survey- In Cambodia we walked through the slums that were nearby the school we were helping at. I had a chat to this guy and asked to take his picture. He lives in the slums and tries to get work day-by-day at construction sites in order to make whatever money he could. Pictured behind him is a pretty standard “wall” of a slum house. It isn’t solid; it’s just an old advertising banner. by: tyson Views[863] -Left Behind- This image was taken at the sobering Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Phnom Penh. A high school before the Khmer Rouge Regime in the `70s turned it into the notorious Security Prison 21 (S-21), it saw an estimated 17,000 people were tortured and imprisoned in just four short years. Of that 17,000 only seven people survived. This cell, constructed in an old classroom, held officers of the Khmer Rouge after their own leaders turned on them. Beds (and sometimes bloodstains) are pretty much kept how they were found when the UN came to Cambodia and intervened. by: tyson Views[1394] -The Innocent- This image was taken at the Choeung Ek Killing Field site. An orchard and Chinese graveyard before the Khmer Rouge regime in the `70s turned it into a killing field, it houses a Buddhist stupa which displays more than 5,000 human skulls that have been unearthed. An estimated 17,000 people were brutally executed at the Choeung Ek killing field site alone, including women, children and even babies. As you walk through the fields you can still see human bones coming up through the dirt. by: tyson Views[1091] -The Way We Were- Whilst back in Cambodia for another volunteer mission trip I wanted to capture the charm and wonder of Cambodia while also capturing the harsh poverty that went alongside it. This is a picture of some of the wall carvings in one of the temples in Angkor Wat in the Siem Reap province of Cambodia. There are hundreds of temples in this region which are a remnant of the once glorious Khmer Empire. Quite a contrast to how the country is now; still struggling over thirty years after Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge regime decimated this nation. by: tyson Views[857] My skinned glowed as if I was the sun and the world was starving for heat.     After the ceremony all the people cheerfully celebrate and dance on the scorched dusty red earth to which they have grown accustom to. Even though they have a hard life through song and dance they find a way to overcome this hardship. These people don’t have a lot but they still find happiness in the simple things. by: view Views[662] People from the village gather at temple to celebrate the end of the dry season and the coming of the rainy season which they call the cross season. That hot and sunny Sunday in April at the small village of Somrong all the people gather, even those that moved to the city in search of a better life returned that day to celebrate with their families. The temple was built by famous monk Ven. Somnieng Hoeurn who was born there and held the ceremony that day. Each person has a bowl of rice which they patiently hold during the ceremony after which they donate it to the monks. Custom dictates that women should cover their shoulders, they usually do this with white handmade lace scarf. by: view Views[1183] Mother and daughter hurried to the pagoda to prepare for the ceremony, while others are still working. Before entering the pagoda, they take of their shoes and even though that Sunday was really hot, they covered their knees. by: view Views[1831] It is a hard life. Some people sell meat some fish to survive and struggle each day to sell their product. Until somebody buys the fish the raw meat is nothing more but a feast for flies. by: view Views[834] I would like to tell you a story of a place that left a strong impression on me. Upon entering the Somrong village at Shoutnikom district in Siem Reap in Cambodia there was a boy whose gaze is fascinating. He had certain, sincere and naive energy about him. His name is Leengphour and he penitently waits for his mother to finish her work so that they can join the rest of the village at the ceremony. His mother is a tailor but during the weekend she sells meat so that her youngest child can attend school. Leengphour father is an English teacher in Somrong High school. by: view Views[914]
     
    A poor, physically challenged boy with twisted limbs, who roams around Phnom Penh on a wheelchair. Getting some rest on a bench half under a tree in a bright, sunny afternoon. by: divyagupta Views[1507] This was taken at Angkor Wat, one of Siem Reaps most popular Wat's. I loved the juxtaposition of the little girl walking, with no shoes and tattered clothes compared with the masses of tourist behind and the history of Angkor Wat in the distance. by: courtneyholloway Views[1491] I came across these kids at Bayon in Siem Reap. Many children who live in and around the lake do not attend school, so many of them cannot read.
