    After her husband died, Da Silva returned to her hometown to search for her family. The only person who was still alive was her brother, Francisco, which goes once in a month to help his sister with her house. “I love her and it took a long time to understand why she decided to leave her family to the backlands: it was because of love. When she came back asking for help I couldn’t do anything but help. The stream Da Silva collects water from is not exactly at her backyard - specially because she doesn’t have a backyard per se – but 20 minutes away from her home. Neither did Da Silva, until her husband asked her to live in the Brazilian hinterlands, also know as Sertão. Suddenly she saw herself leaving her hometown in the north of Minas Gerais, Brazil, to a complete isolated place. They build their home with bricks made of anthill sand and collected water from a stream nearby. And despite the fact there was no electricity or sanitation, they were doing fine until a one day, when both faced the biggest fear of living isolated brings: sickness. After having successive heart attacks in a week, Da Silva husband passed away. The only way Da Silva found not to drown in depression was to start working as a nanny for her ‘closest’ neighbours. This is how she met Bruna, the milkman’s daughter. Bruna’s mother worked as a planter and couldn’t take care of her daughter until the night comes. This is when Da Silva met Bruna, when she was only two years old. Overnight organize the food that we would eat and load during the next 15 days, and also the clothes that we raised to be donated to the traditional community during the trip. We got to the paradise and desert island of Bananas. Unloading the luggage we had another surprise: everything was wet. Our lodge in a cave, made fire and Renato presented in the script of the trip. We made a circle and talked, each was given a new name, dined and slept inside the cave. From there it would be so cold bath, toilets rare, little comfort, but very challenging and learning. Almost always paddled endlessly until the doors of a community hidden in the mangroves or the arms of a river, in the woods or on top of a hill. The canoe trip requires one of the integral absolute detachment.     It was amazing to see how people in Brazil use this transportation way to get from the top of the mountain to get to the village center.     I really loved this shot because as well as the rusting piplines and rusting jetty, the scraggly seaweed really made this place feel 'dead', yet full of emotions. I personally liked the grey water which lacked of any colour and any real feel to it but i thought that the way it looked rough conveyed the emotion of nature being angry at what we have done to it.: by callumthomas, Views[367]
