When the lake was invaded by smelt, alewives, and sea lampreys, the trout were brought to the edge of extinction. In the 1980s, Chinook salmon were imported from the West Coast but now the alewives they eat have dwindled. Huron is second only to Lake Erie for commercial fishing in the Great Lakes, but there is conflict between recreational fishing and the Saugeen Ojibway First Nation, whose lands are on the south shore of the Lake and the adjacent Georgian Bay.
