    Many of the schools in Uganda are underfunded and in desperate need to accommodate the growing number of children. Both private and public schools are in need of financial support to give their kids the best chance at an education. This school near Jinja was a private school that met us with an infectious curiosity, open arms, lively song, and inspiring dance. Their hope is inspire visitors to believe in them and support the future of their education. A majority of the kids at this school are orphans with little or no financial support. The teachers and community are their hope at a better future. by: audreyjeane Views[2095] In Xinjiang, it is not an uncommon sight to see men crowd around in small groups taking part in some kind of culinary sharing sessions. What I've noticed is that they were usually male dominated. As such, this young girl caught my immediate attention. She struck me as a non-conformist, someone who goes out of the way to satisfy her own curiosity and acquire more knowledge, even if it's unconventional. I find myself standing there, observing her learning intently, in absolute amazement. I wanted to give her a penny for her thought. by: priscilla_ong Views[730] I chanced upon this bunch of kids along the back streets of Yarkand (Xinjiang, Western China) participating in what seems to be the most popular childhood activity in town. It requires a deck of round cards and the players' ability to toss each card against the ground perpendicularly so that it would bounce back up and override the opponent's card. Watching them in complete indulgence makes me realize; that games and fun take form in the simplest possible way, and does not always have to involve the latest electronic gadgets.     A peek into the life of a typical Uyghur family, in Xinjiang, Western China. It appears that bonding over a freshly sliced melon is an integral part of their culture. There is this great sense of intimacy that radiates from them, when you see them relishing the sweetness, in both the fruit as well as the kinship. by: priscilla_ong Views[1132] This is exactly how I was greeted on my first day of travel to Xinjiang, Western China. It was difficult to sit through the entire slaughter, although I must admit there is evidently an interest in the transitional process. It does make me look at my plate differently, and wish it has remained as a black box that mysteriously transforms animals into something edible. It's highly controversial; but something in the children's eyes tells me that the shocked look on my face must have been quite disturbing for them too. by: priscilla_ong Views[649] Although very poor, the Kyrgyz families want the best for their children. Even when this implies leaving their children behind in the valley, so they can attend school. Hagelbek, one of our hosts, told us that he sometimes does not see his children during all of summer. It must be heart wrecking to leave your children behind in the city at the beginning of spring. Nevertheless, Hagelbek is proud that his children now enjoy better education then he himself has had. For the young children living with the family in the highland areas, there is a lot of room to play.     Kids are taught by rote, so they know how to rattle off the answer but to think critically is another thing all together. They also had no idea where Australia is. They told us they were very happy because they didn't have to walk 7km's each day just to get water. Instead it was only a couple of minutes walk.
