    There is hope in the eyes and smiles of the children of Uganda. They are eager to learn and driven by curiosity. There is joy found in the simplest of moments and a sense of community that isn't often seen in more developed countries. These young children were playing along the road with tires and buckets, deeply immersed in their own world of make-believe. While many are in the early stages of education, they avidly yell out affectionate phrases of Many of the schools in Uganda are underfunded and in desperate need to accommodate the growing number of children. Both private and public schools are in need of financial support to give their kids the best chance at an education. This school near Jinja was a private school that met us with an infectious curiosity, open arms, lively song, and inspiring dance. Their hope is inspire visitors to believe in them and support the future of their education. A majority of the kids at this school are orphans with little or no financial support. The teachers and community are their hope at a better future. by: audreyjeane Views[2233] Many women in Uganda ( like the one pictured here) are creating a hopeful future for their children by making and selling necklaces to pay for a better education. Women make less than $10 a month and a good education can cost up to $350 a year. Women in this village have a partnership with a US based charity called BOH to help sell their products in the USA. The program is empowering women to sustain a business that not only supports their children's education but supports their needs as a family. by: audreyjeane Views[1262] In Xinjiang, it is not an uncommon sight to see men crowd around in small groups taking part in some kind of culinary sharing sessions. What I've noticed is that they were usually male dominated. As such, this young girl caught my immediate attention. She struck me as a non-conformist, someone who goes out of the way to satisfy her own curiosity and acquire more knowledge, even if it's unconventional. I find myself standing there, observing her learning intently, in absolute amazement.     Kids are taught by rote, so they know how to rattle off the answer but to think critically is another thing all together. They also had no idea where Australia is. Mind you, the average Aussie student would have no clue where Gulu is. by: sharoncrean Views[553] Education is so prized that primary school kids will come to class even on Saturdays. In Gulu this was one of only a few empty classrooms. Note the lack of power, whiteboards and resources we depend on. by: sharoncrean Views[1379] Kitchen Quiet: The hot, bustling outside activity for the nutrition programme sits at odds with the stillness of the school kitchen. Unused stoves and cooking implements are held in storage here for use when learners attend hospitality/catering lessons. by: leighat_durban Views[555] Achieving Together: A large pile of chopped wood rests against the wire school fence. The wood is collected for use in building fires for the cooking of school meals. Volunteers work together quietly and efficiently to sort the pots for the food distribution while learners wait, and watch eagerly, from their desks. by: leighat_durban Views[749] Taking Stock: A community volunteer involved in food preparation for the school nutrition programme, wipes a plate with dishwashing detergent. She eagerly smiled and asked me to take her picture but stopped smiling as soon as I raised the camera. The combination of the barbed wire fence and the badge pinned on her dress reminded me of a scene in a military camp, which was in line with the rigidly ordered way she approached her cooking tasks. by: leighat_durban Views[532]
     
    Children who have lost gravely still sing, dance, and smile like they mean it, because, at Mbaka Oromo, a chance for an education also means the chance to be part of a community. by: rarudwall Views[630] Teachers earn barely enough to pay their bills but will stop at nothing to inspire. As a result, their students have become some of the nation's top performers in academics, athletics, and choral performance. by: rarudwall Views[675] Mothers from nearby villages hike to the school with grain on their backs and livestock in tow. They toil under the hot Kenyan sun, cooking of their own supplies so that parentless students have at least one meal that day. by: rarudwall Views[705] In the case of Mbaka Oromo Primary School, the answer is more than 600. Waves of children clad in pale blue and yellow uniforms trek up to ten miles a day to get an education. by: rarudwall Views[1508] In a region of Kenya decimated by AIDS and civil war, where children act as heads of household and must scavenge for food to feed their siblings, one would expect classrooms to have gone silent.
