It is one of the oldest living cities in the world and the holiest pilgrimage site in Hinduism. Before coming I knew I would get to partake in Diwali…the festival of color and lights. This is a picture of my host father and sister creating a Rangoli for the festival. Diwali is the celebration of Rama's coming, and signifies the victory of light over darkness. It is celebrated by the marriage of Ganesh-ji and Lakshmi. The Rangoli is a sand drawing created as a sacred welcoming for Lakshmi to enter the home and bless all inside. While the festival preparations extend over a period of five days, the main celebration coincides with the new moon (literally light vs. the dark). I was fortunate enough to celebrate this day with my host family because while so much of the visual beauty is outside, the sacred rituals are done in the home.     16 years old daughter of the yak shepherds Karma is enjoying her morning wash. It will be her first summer with the family after a few years of high school in busy and “civilized” Kathmandu. Life of a shepherd attracts her less and less. She has a Facebook account now too. by: palnitro Views[1429] Early morning in the high valley (4300m) at the edge of Upper Mustang (Nepal) where mother of a small family is milking one of the 70 yaks that belong to them. Behind that mountain is Tibet. Yaks are very valuable and provide food, fur/wool and fuel for many remote villages in the desert area. While one may be considered rich having so many yaks it is a non-stop hard work that only leaves room for a prayer. by: palnitro Views[1560] The shepherds take their families to the jailoos. If not all their children, at least the youngest ones. Women are responsible for the yurt, turning it into a living place during the day and a sleeping room at night.
