    Crete, Greece by: livefasttravel Views[299] Vikos Gorge is in the Guiness Book of Records as the deepest gorge in the world with a drop of 1000m at its deepest point. Its more like an Amazonian world in there with fresh waters channelling down.     A 2 and a half hour drive from our base camp driving over high mountain passes saw us arriving at Gythio. We visited solely to capture this shipwreck called The residents of Gennadi don’t seem to worry too much about the state of things, and won’t pass up an opportunity to get together. In true laid-back Greek style, they held their annual fishing competition one evening on the beach in front of the town. The area had suffered a notable decrease of investment in recent years, leaving these monoliths towering over the fields that probably would have been home to the once growing community of British expatriate retirees. by: robindhevans Views[733] In 2009 I spent three months living in Gennadi, working as a watersports instructor in front of three hotels at nearby Kiotari Bay in the south of Rhodes, Greece. It was quiet in Kiotari. Many of the hotel sun chairs were left empty; a reflection of the slow start to the holiday season as a result of the poor economic climate. Rhodes island is dominated by the tourism industry, with the endless days of sun and consistent wind ordinarily drawing sunbakers and watersport enthusiasts from all over Europe.     Hero Square - Hősök tere is surrounded by two important buildings, Museum of Fine Arts on the left and Palace of Art (or more accurately Hall of Art) on the right. On the other side it faces Andrassy Avenue which has two buildings looking at the square — one is residential and the other one is the embassy of Serbia (former Yugoslavian embassy where Imre Nagy secured sanctuary in 1956). The central site of the hero's square, as well as a landmark of Budapest, is the Millennium Memorial (also known as Millennium Monument or Millenary Monument) with statues of the leaders of the seven tribes that founded Hungary in the 9th century and other outstanding figures of Hungarian history (see below). The construction of the memorial was started when the one thousandth anniversary was celebrated (in 1896), but it was finished only in 1900 and the square got its name then.: by temberowa, Views[701]
