    The ex mariner Hasyim, like a modern Caronte of Dante’s Divina Commedia, is now working as accompany for workers from a ship to another. He took me for a trip in the canal for showing me proudly the working process. by: myversion Views[928] Some of the workers have just finished to load a “pinisi” with gypsum, which going through the direction of the Surabaya harbor. All of the hooded workers which are covered with the whit dust of the gypsum are looking like the crew of a ghost ship. by: myversion Views[951] Workers are often using the turbid canal which comes from the Ciliwung River(Turbid water river)and flows into the sea, for moving from one ship to another for trasfering the stocks and the workers. During the navigation it’s usual to see the maintenance work of these old wood ships called “pinisi” in Bahasa, directly on the little platforms on the water. by: myversion Views[977] Conditions of work are still ancestral, they work in the old way, without glove, barefoot and they protect their respiratory tracts from dust by covering their faces with t-shirts. by: myversion Views[796] Recently I lived two months in Jakarta. Of course Jakarta is not a typical touristic city, few monuments, few attraction. One of the places that caught my attention is “Sunda Kelapa”, the old harbor in Batava(the old name of Jakarta). The atmosphere here is dreamlike. The leaden sky, and the workers moving like ghosts are seem to take you into a dream.     Children of the village Kampung Air which is next to the Sunda Kelapa port, hang out on the bridge. They have no open spaces to play in their village, but the open sea is the only playground. by: sundakelapa Views[725] Fishing in your own yard is a common thing if you happen to live next to the sea. In this village next to the Sunda Kelapa port, it's called Kampung Air or literally sea village. Some of the houses are above the sea water. It's even possible to fish up from your own porch here. Convenient probably to some, but hygienic factor does not always the main part in this village. Harsh environment conditions has become a day to day common thing. They working hours does not even better either. Some of them even started earlier than the Sunrise and the job does not even complete after the Sunset. Odd working hours at night is also part of their life. by: sundakelapa Views[709] Family's hope is literally the meaning of the ship's name Harapan Keluarga. Conveying some hopes and opportunities that put the sailors and fisherman of North Jakarta port into the ocean everytime. by: sundakelapa Views[773] Traditional ship at Sunda Kelapa port North Jakarta. These ship mostly used for fishing on the ocean. A journey took weeks, sometimes months that would earn them all sorts of fishery product commodities. Though some ship also provide sea freighter to most areas throughout the Indonesian Islands.     For tourists, ride a simple motorized boat to get around the beach can be a fun and new experience. For the crew of the boat, rent a boat is a living. Whatever it is, they are both symbiotic mutualism. by: itsindonesia Views[445]
