    Can you picture yourself living in a place where the nearest neighbour lives 15km away from you? Neither did Da Silva, until her husband asked her to live in the Brazilian hinterlands, also know as Sertão. Suddenly she saw herself leaving her hometown in the north of Minas Gerais, Brazil, to a complete isolated place. They build their home with bricks made of anthill sand and collected water from a stream nearby. And despite the fact there was no electricity or sanitation, they were doing fine until a one day, when both faced the biggest fear of living isolated brings: sickness. After having successive heart attacks in a week, Da Silva husband passed away. The only way Da Silva found not to drown in depression was to start working as a nanny for her ‘closest’ neighbours. This is how she met Bruna, the milkman’s daughter. Bruna’s mother worked as a planter and couldn’t take care of her daughter until the night comes. This is when Da Silva met Bruna, when she was only two years old.     This was the first time I had visited a developing country, and in hindsight I'm so glad it was India. Within the first day I'd had a breakdown when the reality of extreme poverty hit me. And yet reaching the more secluded hills of Kalimpong, I witnessed the positive side of poverty. The appreciation that the people had for every little thing was and is something to learn from. One of my biggest learnings was how universal certain traits of humanity were. For instance, the motherly love and pride in this photograph is a familiar subject matter, something we can recognise immediately without needing to know anything more.     This photo was taken outside at -80 degrees Celsius in 10 metres per second winds. Before I went to Antarctica, I spent my last doctors paycheck on a Canon 5D Mark II body. Sigma then supported me by means of the loan of various lens. I read the operating manual for my Canon which advised not to use the camera so far below zero. I am interested and used to working at extremes and testing technology to discover its limitations to help find ways to improve function in all conditions. As it turns out, my Canon body and Sigma lens continued to operate and perform through all year round use outside in temperatures from -25C down to -80C (with -110 Celsius windchill). The other main consideration with working in such low temperatures is protecting your own safety. If you take your thick cumbersome down glove off in -80C, your flesh will start to freeze within minutes. But, in order to change your camera's settings, you have to take your glove(s) off. So you adapt. Also digital photography now allows you to quickly learn what settings you need to use. Preparation is prevention. And prevention means you get to keep all your fingers!
