    The sun and the old wooden pier on Lake Ohrid. After hiking along the entire, 40 mile long, Teton Crest Trail in four days in the backcountry, not a single bear was seen. She already lost one to natural causes, when she appeared with this COY.     The chinstrap penguin is one of the different species of penguin which is found the South Shetlands. It is separated from the mainland by Magellan's Strait, coined by the Portugese explorer Ferdinand Magellan when he was commissioned by the Spanish to lead exploration to the East Indies. To reach the Pacific Ocean from Europe he travelled across the Atlantic and found Magellan's Strait which enabled access to the Pacific without going down towards the treacherous waters off nearby Antarctica. Being in such close proximity to Antarctica, at the time Magellan passed through Tierra del Fuego there would have been many colonies of King Penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus), which can grow to one metre tall. However, the waves of colonisation that ensued resulted in such pressure from humans on their populations from land clearing, development and even as food and for export, that none would remain in the not too distant future. In recent years, however, a colony has returned to a protected bay off the north-western coast of Tierra del Fuego, and while not yet remarkably successful they have managed to produce a few offspring. This photograph was taken very early one morning and was the second time we had gone to observe the colony. On this occasion we were early enough that no other humans were around and the normally cautious penguins, which prefer to stay on the opposite side of a small river to their human observers, decided to cross the river en masse and explore their surrounds. We sat there, completely still, as troupes of them came right up to us, seemingly as curious about us as we were of them. These four came within metres of me and started singing a song while one of them turned around, seemingly to conduct their musical endeavour. The market was just beginning and different flavours of popular Reggaeton tunes were being blasted from tinny sound systems, seemingly from all directions. Unfortunately for a local sloth, he had overnight chosen a tree right above the central activities of the daytime market, which were encroaching on the forested area. With the realisation of human chaos beneath its tree, the sloth was desperately trying to make an escape to nearby trees without having to climb down its own tree. Unfortunately for the sloth, the nearby trees were not so nearby. In this process of escape the sloth demonstrated some magnificent displays of acrobatics (and energy!) that I did not realise were possible for a sloth. It was fascinating to see the fluid, yet also awkward movements of such a strange creature. But it left me with a heavy feeling of guilt (and helplessness) as I watched this sloth's distress. I am pleased to say that eventually the sloth's efforts were rewarded and he safely made it to the arms of nearby branches, where he clambered away more quickly than I've ever seen a sloth do so. by: mimosa Views[1810]

During the wet season this sandstone wall is transformed into a plentiful oasis, brimming with fish and birds to hunt. Fishermen, who lived by the side of the lake, they come to wash their domestic utensils after meal... by: swarupsphoto Views[618] Almost every day, Thura, the 10 year old son of Manue and Hayma, (his name means bravery in Burmese), takes his father’s buffaloes on a walk to the river. The buffaloes enjoy their journey grazing along the way to finally take a dip in the refreshing river. Thura sometimes joins his animal friends in the water and plays with them. He told me that the water buffalo posing with him in the photo is his oldest friend. After I departed from this village, I was overwhelmed with how this small family lived in togetherness with themselves and nature; how much the mother forest has to give to its brave child if he can appreciate and value what she has to offer by: isma Views[991] Every early morning, the 40-year old Manue, a son of Pushia, returns with his oxen from the nearby forest with a wagon full of wood. Dressed in his traditional Myanmar longji and a jacket to warm him from the morning cold, he has been following in the footsteps of his father since he was a child. Manue delivers the wood to some of the neighbors in exchange of goods (rice, vegetables, eggs, etc) and sometimes to the neighboring villages in exchange of money that helps him buy specific goods and medicine for his family by: isma Views[911]

    6am was our pick up for the morning flight. When we arrived to the take off location, we were greeted by a flurry of workers, laying out and preparing the hot air balloon for flight. It was a strange sight to see the vessel that was going to take you 1km into the air being inflated. Once we were up, the sun began to rise. The morning fog that filled the limestone valleys glimmered like pale water. All the while, the pilot was in contact with the ground team, informing them of wind strength, and the possibility of a landing location. We saw the town begin to wake up. Monks in orange garb created streaks of colour that were highlighted against the dull grey of the pavement. The image of the second balloon floating amongst the mountains surrounded by mist bathing in the morning light is one I will never forget.: by rhysacker, Views[359]
