    This fascinating sunset behind the mountains between Muscat and Dubai perfected the day we've spent with the lovely Omani family. by: evamast Views[1136] A typical Omani family home in a village close to the barrier lake we visited.     The residents of Gennadi don’t seem to worry too much about the state of things, and won’t pass up an opportunity to get together. In true laid-back Greek style, they held their annual fishing competition one evening on the beach in front of the town. Much beer was consumed, and few fish were caught. by: robindhevans Views[704] The area surrounding the town of Gennadi, the southern-most town on Rhodes, is littered with silent shells of unfinished buildings, reclaimed mostly by tough, prickly weeds. The area had suffered a notable decrease of investment in recent years, leaving these monoliths towering over the fields that probably would have been home to the once growing community of British expatriate retirees. by: robindhevans Views[775] In 2009 I spent three months living in Gennadi, working as a watersports instructor in front of three hotels at nearby Kiotari Bay in the south of Rhodes, Greece. It was quiet in Kiotari. Many of the hotel sun chairs were left empty; a reflection of the slow start to the holiday season as a result of the poor economic climate. Rhodes island is dominated by the tourism industry, with the endless days of sun and consistent wind ordinarily drawing sunbakers and watersport enthusiasts from all over Europe. However at the time, this scene was not uncommon along the east coast beaches. by: robindhevans Views[788] It was beautiful sunny Sunday Morning behind my neighbourhood where there are still farm fields. The ray of light are caught by the trees and made this beautiful scene. Locals like to let their chicken pet running freely through the fields. They're not worry about loosing them because eventually the chickens would get very far. by: lieshabear Views[1424] Mrs. Nik and her son, Rofiq, waits in the shades while Mr. Nik works on burning the remaining cane plants after the harvest. by: lieshabear Views[855]
     
    This is Mr. Nik. He lives a few blocks away, but his family owns a cane field behind my neighbourhood. The cane are harvest once in a year. After it's being harvested, the remaining plants have to be burnt before the farmers could plant the new plants. Mr. Nik works as a factory labor on week days and takes care of his field on Sundays. by: lieshabear Views[959] The effects of a growing city is the growth of the housing which can expand to the far side of the city. Most affordable housing are small houses, built from what used to be a farming field. Some field still existing between those houses, like this chili field that is being harvest by Lastri. She is one of the locals that lives behind my neighbourhood and still owns her family field. Her sons have all grown up and chose to move to a bigger city rather than to be a farmer like their parents. by: lieshabear Views[931] Ifugaos, residents of the Banaue and Batad rice terraces are primarily farmers. Signage detail the history of the Ifugao rice terraces, but a sign for a job opening also shows the financial opportunities for such areas frequented by tourists. Though tourism creates business opportunities, the practices of the old traditions might not be of interest to the young locals. Restaurant cooks and waiters, tour guides, or even souvenir vendors have more appeal. by: jsanjuan Views[1200] Memories are something that you can cherish and relieve.     Holi is a flamboyant festival where coloured powder or watercolours are thrown on one another in celebration of the beginning of spring. Featured here is a mother and her child after hours of having been doused in the colour. by: zosogis Views[1469] On our many excursions throughout my semester abroad one stop was at the Howard Castle just outside of York, England. On the property was this small pond, bridge, and building display that was irresistible. After taking a few pictures and getting the composition right I had one of my favorite taken abroad. by: rpmitchell Views[527] I title this A Different Take because while in London many photographers choose to take a distant shot of The Eye. Using a Canon ultra wide lens I was able to catch this piece from the base of the wheel giving a different perspective.     Morning and cathedrals and churches are open. Some are in hurry, some - not. For couple times question of believe arises. Most of tourists are observers, they do see facade of beautiful buildings.
