    There is hope in the eyes and smiles of the children of Uganda. They are eager to learn and driven by curiosity. There is joy found in the simplest of moments and a sense of community that isn't often seen in more developed countries. These young children were playing along the road with tires and buckets, deeply immersed in their own world of make-believe. While many are in the early stages of education, they avidly yell out affectionate phrases of Many of the schools in Uganda are underfunded and in desperate need to accommodate the growing number of children. Both private and public schools are in need of financial support to give their kids the best chance at an education. This school near Jinja was a private school that met us with an infectious curiosity, open arms, lively song, and inspiring dance. Their hope is inspire visitors to believe in them and support the future of their education. A majority of the kids at this school are orphans with little or no financial support. The teachers and community are their hope at a better future. by: audreyjeane Views[1942] In one of the small homes that consist of two rooms with dirt floors, the newly made jewelry hangs to be dried. The room with a single window ventilates the freshly dipped lacquer beads. After they are dried, the women take the beads to various markets and prepare orders to be shipped to the US. by: audreyjeane Views[854] Many women in Uganda ( like the one pictured here) are creating a hopeful future for their children by making and selling necklaces to pay for a better education. Women make less than $10 a month and a good education can cost up to $350 a year. Women in this village have a partnership with a US based charity called BOH to help sell their products in the USA.     Education is the key to breaking the poverty cycle even if it is in a mud hut with no electricity. Kids start school at the age of 3 for half a day. By the time they get to primary school they need to know English. by: sharoncrean Views[2028] The cool thing about war ending is that people are now safe to start their own businesses and lead a peaceful life. Here is a bakery in Gulu that employs a few young guys. The smell of the bread baking was exceptional. by: sharoncrean Views[409] People displaced by war have had to live in these huts for over 20 years. Now the government is telling people to go back to their homeland but they don't even know where that is. There's no water, school, crops, or anything. They have to start from scratch. by: sharoncrean Views[591] It's mainly the women who have to walk a really long way to get water but when it came to getting a photo only the men were around. I bet the ladies were out working in the fields. At least they don't have to walk far for water now. by: sharoncrean Views[617] The results of having access to water.     No light in a mud hut was tricky for photo taking but the look on these girls faces were worth it. by: sharoncrean Views[631] Yep, these are uni students at a conference. No, it's not a tin shed, well sort of. They were here for 9 hours on a Saturday asking the same questions that young people in the West do - how do I know I should marry this particular person? by: sharoncrean Views[379] Kids are taught by rote, so they know how to rattle off the answer but to think critically is another thing all together. They also had no idea where Australia is. Mind you, the average Aussie student would have no clue where Gulu is. by: sharoncrean Views[518] Education is so prized that primary school kids will come to class even on Saturdays. In Gulu this was one of only a few empty classrooms. Note the lack of power, whiteboards and resources we depend on. by: sharoncrean Views[1280] If it weren't for the background I would say this would be one of my most favourite photos.     It doesn't matter where I am in the world as soon as kids see a camera they can't help themselves and get silly. These kids were no different. When they saw themselves on the video screen they thought it was the most hilarious thing they'd ever seen. by: sharoncrean Views[665] These kids don't have the money to pay for school fees so instead one of their jobs was to collect water for their families. We would baulk at the idea of a 4 year old carrying 30kg's of water but to them it's all they've ever known. by: sharoncrean Views[755] While checking out the hand pump who would come along but a couple of women and a child. They told us they were very happy because they didn't have to walk 7km's each day just to get water. Instead it was only a couple of minutes walk. They weren't too keen on getting their photo taken until they discovered we were the ones who got the well organised. by: sharoncrean Views[415] One of the deep bore wells we were checking out for an orphanage in Gulu.
