The role of nature and people’s responsibility towards it is still unclear it seems in many parts of southern India. This river runs along the edge of Saraguru and while it is revered (a temple can be seen in the middle of the river) and valued for its role in agricultural irrigation and domestic uses, certain practices such as washing clothes along the bank introduces soaps and toxins into the water. This is affecting some of the fish populations and degrading the health of the ecosystem. Without the proper infrastructure to change those practices though, it is a hard battle to fight. by: jbatryn Views[996] “Fresh meat”. Another shop keeper was weighing and sorting fish when we passed by. Like the other shop keepers we met, he was eager to share his work with us. When we stopped to see what he was doing, he told us to wait and he would show us how he cleans and prepares the fish.     “Eager to share”. While wandering through the shop-lined streets in Saraguru, we stopped to ask some of the shopkeepers if we could take pictures of their colorful shops. The language barrier was overcome with gestures and smiles, and when they saw that we were interested in their shops and their work, they were more than happy to open up to us and share about their livelihoods. They proudly showed their large piles of cotton outside and then motioned for us to follow them to another building where they had a large pile of lentil-like grain, which they again proudly showcased. Cotton is grown near Saraguru and it is fairly common to see trucks overloaded with large bags of cotton passing through the narrow streets. Cotton is a very labor intensive crop and one of the local men said that many parents do not want their children to continue in farming. Instead, the children are encouraged to become doctors or engineers, where they can enjoy an easier life. Partly due to this, more and more people are moving away from the rural areas to find work in those fields and farm owners are finding it increasingly harder to find labor to help run the farms. by: jbatryn Views[1201] “Main Street”. The village of Saraguru is located in southern India and is a mix of old and new. Many people have cell phones but lack reliable electricity or plumbing and the road is shared between overloaded trucks, bicycles, and people and livestock walking.     People in Serra Negra - Brazil go down to up from a dizzy height, they call to this system The process in Ban Thasawang, a village weaving silk for the elites, is much more complicated than on the semi-automatic loom. It requires four to five people working together on one piece of fabric. Even though they work as a team, one person always sits below the ground level. Immersed in semidarkness and isolated from the gossips above, staring blankly ahead. The patterns are often a signature of the village or even a family, secretly guarded for generations. In spite of its beauty, the handmade silk attracts less and less buyers every year. Pimnipa Pasakanon squints in the acrid smoke from her small wood-burning stove while performing the process. Doing it for the upteenth time, she's skilled and swift. The silk produced by the family in summer, once a source of pride and entertainment, is in the hands of the passing generation.     A housewife contemplates dying caterpillars on their way to forming cocoons. Recent summers have been way hotter than usual and that has killed thousands of silkworms, dealing a big blow to the meager earnings of the poor villagers. The villages around Surin in eastern Thailand were once a hub of silk production. The women in the household used to take care of each step of the silk making process, from rearing the worms to weaving the fabric. by: gloriakurnik Views[1348] After the ceremony all the people cheerfully celebrate and dance on the scorched dusty red earth to which they have grown accustom to. Even though they have a hard life through song and dance they find a way to overcome this hardship. These people don’t have a lot but they still find happiness in the simple things. by: view Views[614] People from the village gather at temple to celebrate the end of the dry season and the coming of the rainy season which they call the cross season. That hot and sunny Sunday in April at the small village of Somrong all the people gather, even those that moved to the city in search of a better life returned that day to celebrate with their families. The temple was built by famous monk Ven. Somnieng Hoeurn who was born there and held the ceremony that day. Each person has a bowl of rice which they patiently hold during the ceremony after which they donate it to the monks.     I would like to tell you a story of a place that left a strong impression on me. Upon entering the Somrong village at Shoutnikom district in Siem Reap in Cambodia there was a boy whose gaze is fascinating. He had certain, sincere and naive energy about him. His name is Leengphour and he penitently waits for his mother to finish her work so that they can join the rest of the village at the ceremony. His mother is a tailor but during the weekend she sells meat so that her youngest child can attend school.     This photo is of my father and his younger brother, Salam walking back to the village compound after picking dates, as my father and his brothers did as young boys for their livelihood. They now only pick dates as a pass time when visiting the village.
