The empty seats of the local Catholic church in San Andrés Itzapa on the day of Maximon's birthday, October 28, a day of celebration. The church views Maximon, "the Devil itself", as a serious threat to Christianity. "Maximon-ism promotes sexual promiscuity, prostitution, homosexuality, alcoholism and drug abuse. It promotes the lack of moral," a local priest writes in an information folder on Maximon.
