A City of Beauty and a City of War: Despite being a beautiful city with an array of natural and man-made masterpieces, Barcelona also harbours a darker past. A Republican stronghold in the Spanish Civil War, the Mediterranean metropolis suffered heavily during the reign of Franco and these scars were not quickly forgotten.
