    Mae Salong a été fondée par le 93e régiment du Kuomindang (KMD). Ce régiment chinois, qui se revendique nationaliste, opposé au communisme de Mao, s’est d’abord réfugié au Myanmar après la révolution chinoise de 1949, avant d’en être chassé au début des années 1960. Ils se sont alors établis au nord de la Thaïlande en recréant une société à l’identique de celle qu’ils avaient quittée au Yunnan.
