Three hundred and sixty years ago, these two castles, and eight other forts, formed the Sistema de fuertes de Valdivia, also known as "la Llave del Mar del Sur" (the Key of the Southern Sea). Pirates have tried to enter into the bay, but they could never penetrate trough the fort system.
