    I still feel somewhat uncomfortable with myself for taking this shot as it appears so exploitative at first glance, but this woman had been so proud and eager to get a photograph of her baby that I couldn’t refuse. But this was exactly the sense of acceptance that I felt within the Kalimpong community. These people are so strong, with an incredible adaptability to whatever dilemmas come their way. by: juliezhuphotography Views[601] Difference often makes us laugh. Not for superiority’s sake, but simply because we don’t know what to make of it initially. Again a mother’s love prevails as the familiar element in this photograph, but of course what we see first is a little nude boy having a bath outside in the not-so-sunny weather. Kalimpongians do not have the easiest access to clean water, especially those living so far from the centre, so we can only assume this was a rare treat for the boy. by: juliezhuphotography Views[525] This was the first time I had visited a developing country, and in hindsight I'm so glad it was India. Within the first day I'd had a breakdown when the reality of extreme poverty hit me. And yet reaching the more secluded hills of Kalimpong, I witnessed the positive side of poverty. The appreciation that the people had for every little thing was and is something to learn from. One of my biggest learnings was how universal certain traits of humanity were. For instance, the motherly love and pride in this photograph is a familiar subject matter, something we can recognise immediately without needing to know anything more. While India as a 'place' was completely unfamiliar to me, motherly love was as familiar as anything, leaving me questioning the concept of 'place' as location. by: juliezhuphotography Views[728] An Afghan woman stands breastfeeding her child while waiting in line to receive aid from the Missionaries of Charity – better known as the Mother Teresa nuns. The nuns who have lived in Kabul since 2004 help almost 300 Afghan families they have personally visited and found to be in dire need. Afghanistan has no welfare system to support the poor, nor does it have any public acceptance of Christianity in the form of physical churches or similar. The nuns supply the families on a weekly basis with basic food, clothing, and other material needs through funding they receive from the Motherhouse in India. by: cathjam Views[2045] A young girl sucks on a mango, representative of all that is fresh and healthy of this area.     Shubha, 41, is the wife of fisherman Shadashiva. Her job as his wife entails her to scale and clean the fish her husband brings back, as well as occasionally to accompany him on fishing trips. Shubha sells the rest of the fish that the family do not require for their personal needs to the rest of the Kodibengre folk. by: dilanied Views[288] The Mother, near the National Gallery, Ottawa, ON by: michelefacciotto Views[504] Mothers from nearby villages hike to the school with grain on their backs and livestock in tow.
