         		 It's hard to imagine how life can go on in a city that was hit so heavily, but Christchurch fights back – the “Re:Start” project in the “Red Zone” and former downtown area gives shop owners the possibility to reopen their businesses – rebuilding the center will take at least another 10 to 20 years.          		 Other roads and residential areas have also been affected by the quake, so many beautiful houses that had to be left behind. The boardwalk on this street resembles a rollercoaster more than the street it was once before. The autumn leaves add to the sadness of this area. : by starsandstripes97, Views[753]
         		 Some single houses are scattered around the Red Zone, the downtown area which are still standing. And they give you a chill – because they are standing as if they had just been left a few minutes ago - except for all the dust of the past two years covering the interior.          		 I am currently travelling around the globe, and these images are a portrait of the city of Christchurch, which was heavily affected by two earthquakes, in September 2010 and February 2011. It left a huge impression on me about the force of nature and why we should be more respectful of it. Most parts of the central business district are gone, or had to be destructed. This church detail demonstrates the severe power of an earthquake – a cracked arch above the entrance, parts have fallen down.          		 I still feel somewhat uncomfortable with myself for taking this shot as it appears so exploitative at first glance, but the woman had been so proud and eager to get a photograph of her baby that I couldn’t refuse.          		 Difference often makes us laugh. Not for superiority’s sake, but simply because we don’t know what to make of it initially. Again a mother’s love prevails as the familiar element in this photograph, but of course what we see first is a little nude boy having a bath outside in the not-so-sunny weather. Kalimpongians do not have the easiest access to clean water, especially those living so far from the centre, so we can only assume this was a rare treat for the boy.: by juliezhu, Views[184]
         		 This was the first time I had visited a developing country and one of my biggest learnings was how universal certain traits of humanity were. For instance, the motherly love and pride in this photograph is a familiar subject matter, something we can recognise immediately without needing to know anything more.: by juliezhu, Views[167]
     
    I can still hear the chuckle of this old woman as we trekked past her home on the side of a very steep mountain. Here she is captured pensive, though moments later she would laugh at me trying to take photographs of the dogs lazing at her feet. What I found in the Kalimpong community was a simple contentment with life, free from what we could actually accurately label #firstworldproblems, minor problems of the developed world which we blow far out of proportion.: by juliezhu, Views[152]

         		 As one travels the one road into Devonport they pass two long lines of trees on both sides of the road. Each tree was planted for an individual member of Devonport who gave their life during the war. In front of each tree is a small white block with a copper plaque that has World War 2 inscribed along the top and the members name at the bottom.          		 One of the gun emplacements still standing in Devonport near the HMNZS Philomel, the home of the New Zealand Navy. Once more this gun looks out across the Waitemata harbour towards auckland city, and was built during the War.          		 Looking out to sea across the Hauraki Gulf from Northhead we see the sun rising behind Rangitoto Island, another New Zealand icon. During World War 2, a Japanese submarine was seen travelling past Rangitoto and heading into the harbour, luckily to no effect however. Shot at F9, shutter speed 1/80sec.          		 One of the corridors that run underground at Northead. These tunnels were built during the war to look out to sea and also facing the city. While many that often led to gun emplacements are now blocked off, a few are still open to the public to explore.
